Germany

[edit]

In Germany, nearly any major town has an old quarter that is referred to as "Altstadt" (Old-town). In many cases (such as in Erfurt), this is also the official name, while in some places (such as Paderborn), it is only a colloquial name. It seems best to me to include a corresponding paragraph and not link any particular German old towns.

Now a set index type of list-article

[edit]

Edits have brought this list-article forward into status of being a wp:SIA Set Index Article, i.e. a list of similarly named things, now distinct from being the lower level wp:DAB disambiguation page. This is a good thing. There is probably not a need for a separate disambiguation page. This can be a developing list-article defining what the term "Old Town" means in various countries and providing examples and providing a list of existing places named Old Town. Please go ahead! --doncram 03:42, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This should be a general information page. Lists need to be created.

[edit]

I don't like how this page rather refrains from getting deeper into explaining the "old towns" and their development across the world. It's a mere list. I suggest we create lists sorted by continent first. Especially List of old towns in Europe should be separated into national lists then. This old town article can focus more on actual historical development then and give a broader picture. That's what the reader expects I think. If he's looking for old town lists, he will follow the links. Cheers Horst-schlaemma (talk) 13:20, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Any objections? If not, I'll start to create lists. -- Horst-schlaemma (talk) 13:55, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

don't tease

[edit]

I question the value of listing Old town of Lausanne et cetera ad nauseam. Any city presumably has an oldest piece. If a given city's old part is noteworthy, the city's article ought to have a section for the old part; link that or don't bother listing the city. —Tamfang (talk) 05:29, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to agree. This article seems to be turning into a list of towns-with-a-history, which ultimately could include practically every town in the world. It should be limited to towns/cities with a clearly identifiable area that is actually known as "the old town", or some close equivalent. GrindtXX (talk) 12:30, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
