Grain Size

[edit]

Phi is a symbol used when describing grain size in sedimentology. Wentworth and Krumbian scales both use φ to describe the size of individual sediment particles.

This should be added to the list of scientific measurements that utilize phi.

alternate symbol

[edit]

the first line "lowercase φ or ϕ" shows two identical symbols on my computer and it's not clear how they are distinguished. i'm not sure how you could guarantee that both different symbols are shown.

Unicode

[edit]

The first paragraph in the "Unicode" section, following the table, should be reconsidered/edited. As noted, browser/font variations display phi differently, so reference to a "loopy" or "open" phi might be displaying the "closed" phi. The resulting formatted text is possibly inconsistent and likely confusing (in my case, the mark-up version displays a barely open version while the formatted version shows a clearly closed/separate-stroked version). I would think it would be clear using the GrGl "" element as in the table, or more clearly the LaTeX version (also, I think "LaTeX" should be just "TeX", or maybe "TeX/LaTeX") .
