Should I change the examples section to bullet points?

[edit]

The examples section is incredibly long, and I'm not sure it's all that enlightening. Is it better if I change it to bullet points with some of the most notorious/historically influential examples? Zsrocks04 (talk) 16:42, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology

[edit]

According to sources that may not be good enough for wikipedia, "tanking" (in the sense of loosing on purpose, be it to take advantage of for a strategic purposes, match fixing, or just to take a break before fighting to win the next round) comes from boxing or tennis, and was (perhaps) first called "to dive" (in the sense "to go down"), then "to tank" (where "tank" meant a swimming pool). It's apparently from the last half of the nineteenth century; presently, the article seems to suggest the concept is much more recent. If anyone can find a valid source, I think this should be included in the article. (talk) 07:45, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tanking (sports)Tanking – Although there are many possible definitions for "Tank" (see Tank (disambiguation)), this article appears to be the only notable usage of "Tanking" on Wikipedia, and therefore the primary topic. 162 etc. (talk) 23:34, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per nom. SnowFire (talk) 14:04, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment e-sports tanking (tanker, aggro use, etc) is different from this sports tanking... so perhaps renaming would be better. Though also in sports, tanking is also just taking a dive, diving a game, spiking (poisoning, drugging) the players to tank a match, ... ;; and unrelated to sports cheating... tanking/detanking a tanker/tank (container vehicle, container) ... -- 65.93.183.249 (talk) 20:57, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I note that Match fixing does currently include a number of instances of the word "tanking" as a synonym for sandbagging - a dubious definition. The reliable sources cited in the article do not use the word "tanking". The solution to this is some serious copyediting at Match fixing (which has been cleanup tagged for nearly five years), including, IMO, removing such instances of the word.
E-sports tanking does not appear to be a topic on Wikipedia, and I am unaware of any reliable sources which discuss it. 162 etc. (talk) 22:35, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support There was a mention of Tanking in other uses of Tank (disambiguation) that did not refer to Sports but the sports one is the clear WP:PrimaryTopic. Servite et contribuere (talk) 23:47, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
