Tangem AG is a Swiss financial technology company that develops hardware and software solutions for blockchain and digital asset management.[1] The company produces smartcard-based hardware wallets and wearable devices to store cryptocurrency private keys offline using secure chip technology.[2] Founded in 2017, Tangem is headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, and operates globally.[3][4]
History
[edit]Tangem AG was established in 2017 by Andrey Kurennykh and Andrew Pantyukhin. In 2018, the company launched its inaugural smartcard wallet in Singapore, described as a "smart banknote" for digital assets, functioning as cold storage accessible through NFC-enabled smartphones.[5]
In 2019, the company secured a $15 million investment from SBI Crypto Investment Ltd., a subsidiary of SBI Holdings.[6][7][4]
In 2021, Tangem released a multicurrency version of its wallet.[8][9]
In 2023, Tangem started a partnership with Visa to develop a crypto-enabled payment card compatible with existing Visa infrastructure.[10][11][12][13][14] The company was granted a patent for technology enabling crypto transactions over standard point-of-sale terminals.[15][16] That year, the company introduced Wallet 2.0, adding an optional seed phrase backup feature, and raised $8 million in a funding round led by Shima Capital, a Web3 venture capital firm.[17][18][19][4]
In 2024, Tangem launched two new products: the Tangem Ring, a wearable hardware wallet, and Stealth Cards, a privacy-oriented wallet line.[20][21][22][23][24] The company received a U.S. patent for private key transfer technology.[25]
In 2025, Tangem was granted a second U.S. patent for its smart ring[26] and announced a self-custodial Visa card using its wallet chip.[27][28]
Tangem has collaborated with organizations such as Stellar, Cardano, Visa, Kudelski Security,[29][30] Samsung, NXP, and Changelly.[31][32] It is a member of the Global Blockchain Business Council and Hyperledger.[33] The company sources secure chip components from Samsung Semiconductor and United Microelectronics Corporation, with fabrication in Singapore and Taiwan.[4] Security audits of its products have been conducted by Kudelski Security, Riscure, Applus+, EMVCo, and CEA-Leti.[34][35][36][2]
Products and technology
[edit]Tangem Wallet
[edit]The Tangem Wallet is a contactless, battery-free crypto wallet shaped like a credit card and equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. It stores private keys offline and follows a non-custodial model.[37][38] The wallet supports over 14,000 digital assets across more than 85 blockchain networks.[39] Private keys are generated and stored within a secure embedded chip certified at Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 6+. Wallets are distributed in sets of two or three identical cards, providing physical redundancy without relying on seed phrase backups.[40][41][39]
The wallet is managed through a mobile app for iOS and Android,[42] which is open-source and available on GitHub.[43]
Tangem also offers customizable hardware solutions, including branded wallets, contactless hardware security modules (HSMs), offline storage devices, programmable smart banknotes, and bearer instruments.[44][32]
