Tetragonopterus is a genus of fish in the family Characidae native to South America.
It is the only member of the subfamily Tetragonopterinae. The subfamily was originally much larger as previously defined, and contained many of the genera known as "tetras".[1] The name "tetra" derives from this former classification.[2]
