Theodor-Octavian Andrei (Romanian: [te.oˈdor oktaviˈan anˈdrej]; born 9 October 2004),[2] is a Romanian singer-songwriter, actor and theatre director. He represented Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with the song "D.G.T. (Off and On)".

Early life and education

[edit]

Birth and family

[edit]

Theodor Octavian Andrei was born in Bucharest, Romania to Simona Andrei and Gheorghe Andrei, both parents alumni of the Politehnica University of Bucharest.[3][4] Growing up as the only child in his family, he enjoyed the company of his adored cats.[5][6]

Andrei’s love for music started early in life.[7] His parents introduced him to legendary vocalists and performers when he was little. Andrei grew up listening to the music of Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and Romanian artists Ștefan Bănică Jr. and Laura Stoica, as this was the music his parents listened to. He started imitating Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson when he was 4 years old. Later on, Andrei discovered the Rock’N’Roll culture on his own and became fond of Little Richard, James Brown, Whitney Houston, Kiss, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Gary Moore, or Joe Bonamass. His biggest role models among the Romanian artists were Gabriel Cotabiță, Jean Gavril, Mihai Traistariu, Dan Bittman, and Connect-R.[8]

Theodor's mom was the first one to believe in his talent. It was in 2014 when during the NextStar audition, mom heard his voice amplified through the multiple speakers and sound systems during the show. That was the very moment when his mom started to believe in Theodor’s talent. Theodor was 10 years old at that time.[9]

Mom accompanied Theodor through numerous musical festivals for the following years. Mom encouraged and helped him tremendously throughout his career, together with Theodor’s father and grandmother.[9]

Schooling and tertiary education

[edit]

Andrei started to study classical piano at age 7. His first piano teacher and singing coach was Raluca Ciocă.[10] His formal piano education ended several years later. Andrei's piano and guitar skills developed further through his own study and practice as he knew from a young age that he wanted to write his own songs.[11]

He confessed in interviews that during the middle school years he was exposed to bullying and that rough period affected him.[1][2][12] Andrei is outspoken about the anti-bullying movement and stands up against different forms and shapes of bullying in the music video of his song, “Artist”.[13]

Andrei graduated from "Dinu Lipatti" National College of Arts, Bucharest, Romania, the Acting & Performing Arts class,[14] in 2023. He received the highest grade on his graduation thesis, named  “The Post-War and Contemporary Romanian Comedy”.[15] The same year he started his university studies in Theater Arts at Hyperion University, in Bucharest. Andrei is focused on completing his training in acting, theater, and related performance skills in the class of theater professor Adriana Trandafir.[16]

Career

[edit]

Music

[edit]

During the summer between the 5th and 6th grade, Andrei started to attend music festivals and competitions. In middle school, Andrei started to work with  his mentor and canto coach, the well known Romanian composer, music professor and music director Dan Dimitriu,[17] the conductor of the “Constantin Tanase” Theater Orchestra.[18] Andrei is running out of words of gratitude for how much his mentor guided him through the music path.[19]

Andrei first gained notice in 2017, age 13, when he participated in the Romanian version of The Voice Kids, where he reached the semi-finals.[20]

Between age 13 and 15, Andrei won multiple jury awards, third places and excellence awards at  national and international music festivals. In 2019, he won First Place at the “Teleorman Pop Fest”.[21]

In 2020, by age 16, Andrei participated in The X Factor Romania (season 9 – 2020), reaching the Bootcamp stage.[20][22]

In 2022  Andrei  won The Great Trophy of “Mihaela Runceanu" International Music Festival,[23] The Great Trophy of “Teleorman Pop Fest”,[24] The Romanian Musicologists and Composers Association Award at the “George Grigoriu” International Music Festival[25] and The First Place/Best Artist at the “Radu Șerban”, National Music Festival.[26][27]

Andrei started to write music before he was 14. He has released several singles starting in 2017, including “Ţigări mentolate” with Valentina and “Prigoria Teen Fest” with Denis Belu (Shtrood).[20]

On Oct 15, 2022 Andrei released his first studio album, “Fragil”, under the Electrecord label. The release happened six days after Andrei turned 18 years old. The album has been sold out four times on popular Romanian market-places. The song "D.G.T." from the album “Fragil” has a special version which won the 2023 Romanian Eurovision National Selection. The song "Artist" from the same album was awarded as "The Best Song of a Singer-Songwriter" at the 2022 edition of the "Radar de Media" Gala Awards.[28]

Eurovision was Andrei's childhood dream. He remembers that every year he watched Eurovision with his family when he was a child and kept telling himself that he would be there, too. Andrei won the Selecția Națională for Eurovision in 2023.[29] Winning the Selecția Națională, and the day his first album was released, were described by Andrei, a 12th grade student at that time, as “the happiest days of my life”.[30]

At Eurovision he participated in the second semi-final on 11 May 2023, but failed to qualify for the grand final. It was later revealed that he had finished in second-to-last place in the semi-final, tied with San Marino on 0 points. Since then Andrei spoke out about the treatment that he faced working with TVR such as rejecting all the ideas he had for staging for his performance in Liverpool and imposing a slower revamp to his song.[31][32]

Andrei has spoken out about how his Eurovision dream slowly but surely turned into a nightmare as a result of the experience with the Romanian national broadcaster TVR.[33] Despite the hurdles, Theodor took matters into his own hands and, together with his friends, self-financed and produced the music video for his song, “D.G.T.”. He also produced the Eurovision Medleys, where he covered all the 37 songs of the competition. He fondly recalls his interactions with Eurovision fans as one of the most incredible experiences in his career. His motto during the Eurovision 2023 was “go after your dreams, don't be afraid to push through the boundaries and insecurities, accept yourselves, love each other freely and make love not war”.[34][35]

After Eurovision, Theodor Andrei had his first UK concert in London organised by Platform '96 called Stage 002 on the 28th of July at The Water Rats, a renowned venue steeped in music history with Bob Dylan, The Pogues, and Oasis playing their first gigs. Platform '96 promised Stage 002 to be his redemption arc. His set was one hour long and included songs from his album Fragil., Eurovision Medleys, as well as covers from various artists of various genres, such as Frank Sinatra, Eminem, Madcon, Bruno Mars, Måneskin, Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many more. Theodor also invited his girlfriend at that time, Diana, as a special guest to surprise the audience with duos and dance breaks.[34]

Andrei is currently working on his second studio album, titled “Echilibru”.[34][36] Three tracks of the album were already released in 2024: ”Preludiu Echilibru”, “Fantoma” and “Zendaya”.

Theatre

[edit]

Andrei  started acting at age 13. At that time, in 2018, he went to a casting for a role in "Nepoții lui Tănase"/ "Tănase's grandchildren" by Alin Gheorghișan, first youth revue style of theater in Romania, at Constantin Tănase Theater in Bucharest.[37]Andrei performed the role of the Majordom (The Butler) between 2018-2019 and the newfound fascination with acting led him to enroll in the Theater arts and acting section of the National College of Arts “Dinu Lipatti”,[38] in Bucharest. Ever since, his life has changed. He started to believe that music and theater go perfectly together and wouldn't resist one without another.[39]

It was during high school when Andrei started his training in acting at Victory of Art School of Theatre, in Bucharest. Under the guidance of Julieta Georoiu, the head of the organization, Andrei started his journey in theater. Andrei has had major roles in a dozen classic plays and musicals during high school. Among them, Andrei played Suflete (Francis Flute)/Thisbe in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (play) by William Shakespeare, and Augustus Waters in "The Fault in Our Stars" (play) by John Green. [37][40] His debut in leading role was as Axel in "Dacă noi ne iubim"/"If we love each other" (musical), original story by Julieta Georoiu, first Romanian rock musical show based on the music of the legendary Romanian pop rock band Holograf.[37]

In 2022 Andrei won Best Actor in a Leading Role for Eduard, in "Paravan Două Telefoane"/"Screen Two Phones" (play) by Matei Lucaci-Grunberg, at the "Grigore Vasiliu Birlic" International Youth Theater Festival.[41]

In 2023 Andrei played the leading role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in  Amadeus (play) by Peter Shaffer, and the play won the Best Play award at the Constanţa International Independent Theater Festival; "Seathre Fest”.[42]

During the same year, 2023, Andrei played Luca in "O Floare de Zăpadă"/ "A Snow Flower" (play), based on Dumitru Solomon's original story "Zăpezile de Altădată". The play won First Place at the Ștefan Mihăilescu-Brăila National Comedy Competition, and Andrei won Ștefan Mihăilescu-Brăila Trophy for the Best Actor in a Leading role.[43] The same play also won Third Place at The National Theatre Olympics for Youth.[44]

In 2024 Andrei played Yvan in "Art (play)" by Yasmina Reza, directed by Clara Ciușcǎ and won the Special Jury Prize for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the "Grigore Vasiliu Birlic" International Youth Theater Festival (FITT „Birlic”).[45]

Since May 2024, Andrei has been playing Mary Sunshine in "Chicago-Musical'/"Vodevil muzical" by John Kander and Fred Ebb, directed by George Costin at the Bucharest Metropolitan Circus.[46]

In March 2025, Andrei began playing  Mercutio in "Romeo and Juliet" (pop-rock-musical) by Gérard Presgurvic based on William Shakespeare's play, directed by Miklos Gabor Kereny (KERO®) at the Operetta and Musical Theater "Ion Dacian", Bucharest.[47]

On 4 April 2025, Andrei started to play Tom in "Invizibilii"/ "The Invisibles" (musical) based on the children's book with the same name by Ioana Pârvulescu, music by Cornel Ilie (Vunk) at Sala Gloria, Bucharest.[48]

Directing

[edit]

Directing started to be part of Andrei’s  interest in 2022, when he participated in the Youth Theater and Short Film Festival-FestTin, with "Neintenționat: un majorat confuz"/ "Unintentional: a confusing coming-of-age" (short film). Andrei received the Best Directing award for a short film by Nae Caranfil.[44]

In 2023, Andrei directed the play and played the leading role Luca in "O Floare de Zăpadă"/ "A Snow Flower"(play) based on Dumitru Solomon's original story "Zăpezile de Altădată". The play won first place at the "Ștefan Mihăilescu-Brăila" National Comedy Competition, and third place at The National Theatre Olympics for Youth.[49][43]

In 2024, Andrei directed "Iubirea Noastră e Raiul/ Our love is Heaven", adaptation of "Heathers:The Musical" by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy. The play won a total of six awards at two Romanian Youth Theater Festivals: the Special Jury Prize, the Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in the Leading Role at "Grigore Vasiliu Birlic" International Youth Theater Festival (FITT „Birlic”). The other three awards were the Special Jury Prize for an Actress in the Leading Role, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Choreography at the "Ludicus" National Youth Theater Festival.[45][50]

A new play directed by Andrei had the opening night on 7 June 2025: the pop-rock-musical "A Midsummer Night's Dream", adaptation of the play by William Shakespeare; original music by Theodor Andrei, music production by Theodor Andrei and Denis Belu (shtrood), choreography by Lilian Carauș and costume design by Alessia Popa-Matei/Theodor Andrei.[51]

Film

[edit]

In 2017, Andrei voiced the character Prințul Miercuri (Prince Wednesday) for the Romanian dub of the children's animated series Cartierul Tigruțului Daniel (Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood), released on Netflix. The dubbing was directed by Sabina Mitra and Mircea Drâmbăreanu.[42]

Andrei continued his television work in 2022 with the role of Horia in "Rățușca cea urâtă" ("The Ugly Duckling"), an episode of the TV series Povești de familie (Family Stories), directed by Raluca Sandu.[52]

In 2023, Andrei appeared as Sică in an episode of the TV series Oamenii legii (The Law Enforcement Officers), also directed by Sandu. The TV series follows four Romanian Police teams in action.[53]

In 2024, he took on the role of Instalatorul (The Plumber) in The Pump, an independent short film directed by Iustin Bauer. During the same year, Andrei portrayed Alecu Tânăr in the Lecții de viață (Life Lessons) episode "Prietenul la nevoie" ("The Friend in Need"), under the direction of Radu Lopotaru. The TV series brings up dramatic stories about people facing trials, betrayals, and hidden passions.[54]

By 2025, Andrei played Colindătorul (The Caroler) in the short film Crăciun Fericit (Merry Christmas), a poignant piece by Alexandra Manda exploring themes of aging and isolation. The film's story is a reflection on the absence of loved ones and how easily we can lose them, not just through death, but also through neglect.[55] The film is a semifinalist at Mirada Corta, the annual International Short Film Festival held in Mexico City, Mexico.[56]

That same year, 2025, he starred as Andrei in Luați-mă înapoi (Take Me Back), a university-based (UNATC) short film, directed by Luca Bădescu. He also co-wrote with Denis Belu (shtrood) the music for Alexandra, a film by Diana Angelson Busuioc about a tragic story of a contemporary Romanian hero.[57]
