Tim Washe (born August 25, 2001) is an American professional ice hockey center for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League (NHL).[1]
Career
[edit]After playing junior hockey with the Nanaimo Clippers in 2020, Washe's career was put on hold during the pause caused by COVID-19 pandemic. After sitting on the sidelines for the first half of the following season, he joined his brother at Western Michigan, for the spring semester. Washe's college career began slow with him scoring a single goal in his abbreviated freshman season, however, because the 20–21 campaign would not count against his four years of eligibility, he would have plenty of time to round out his game.[2] In his first full season with the Broncos, Washe was relegated to a depth roll as he continued to have trouble scoring. He didn't record a single point in his first 15 games but he was able to help the team post a solid record in that time.
Shortly after Tim ended his scoring drought, his hockey career took a bit of a backseat when Paul Washe was accused of rape.[3] Tim's place on the team was unaffected by his brother's situation but the younger Washe still had trouble scoring at the collegiate level. It wasn't until the following year that Washe began to acclimate to the college ranks. While he wasn't one of the main offensive contributors, Washe quadrupled his career point total and helped Western finish as one of the top scoring teams in the nation.
Washe was named as an alternate captain for his senior season. The year began well for the Broncos with the team winning 14 of its first 19 games, with Washe again providing depth scoring. However, after mid-January the team took a sharp turn downwards and went 6–9 down the stretch. In that time, Washe recorded just 2 assists and was unable to pull the Broncos out of their tailspin. Western went 1–3 in their playoff games as the defense imploded and the team was bounced out of the national tournament.
The next year, classified as a graduate student, Washe was named team captain and looked every bit the star player for the Broncos. Not only did he shatter his career best in goals, assists and points, finishing second on the team in scoring, but he led Western Michigan to its first national championship.[4] Over the course of the season, Western was routinely ranked in the top 5 and the Broncos won their first regular season conference title in over 50 years. Even with a guaranteed spot in the NCAA tournament, Washe continued to lead by example and scored in all four of their NCHC playoff games to lift the team to only its third conference championship ever. Washe then led the Broncos to the program's first Frozen Four and, not content simply to make an appearance, the Broncos went on to win the NCAA championship after years of failed bids.
Shortly after wrapping up his college career, Washe signed a contract with the Anaheim Ducks and appeared in two games before the end of the NHL season.[5]
