Tungstate is a name for several related minerals and chemical compounds. Tungstates can be mixed oxides of tungsten or contain tungsten oxyanions. A common type of tungstate is orthotungstate, WO2−4. Most tungsten ores are tungstates.
Examples
[change | change source]The mineral scheelite and the solid solution wolframite are two important tungstates. They are orthotungstates of calcium, manganese, and iron. Most tungsten metal is made from one of these ores.
