U.S. Xpress Enterprises, Inc. is an American transportation and logistics company headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The company offers truckload, dedicated, and brokerage services across North America. As of July 2023, U.S. Xpress operates as a subsidiary of Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc. [1]

History

U.S. Xpress was founded in 1985 by Max Fuller and Patrick Quinn with an initial fleet of 48 trucks. The company grew rapidly over the following decades, becoming one of the largest privately held truckload carriers in the United States by the early 2000s. [2] By 2011, the company had expanded its operations to more than 8,000 tractors and 22,000 trailers, generating annual revenues exceeding $1.5 billion. [3] On March 21, 2023, Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc., one of the largest truckload carriers in North America, announced an agreement to acquire U.S. Xpress for approximately $808 million, or $6.15 per share.[4] The transaction was completed on July 1, 2023, and U.S. Xpress was subsequently delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.[5]

Leadership

Following its acquisition by Knight-Swift, U.S. Xpress continues to operate under its own brand with a leadership team that reports into the larger organization. As of 2024, the company is led by the following executives:[6]

• Tim Harrington, President – Harrington was appointed President of U.S. Xpress in 2023. He joined Swift Transportation in 1997 through the acquisition of Direct Transit and has since held several leadership roles including Regional Vice President of Sales, Vice President of Network Operations, and Executive Vice President of Sales.

• Joshua Smith, Chief Financial Officer – Smith joined U.S. Xpress in 2023 after serving five years as Senior Vice President of Finance at Swift Transportation. Over his 18-year career with Swift, he held various roles across finance, investor relations, data science, billing, and credit.

• Justin Harness, Chief Operating Officer – Harness has been with U.S. Xpress since 2002. He previously served as Executive Vice President of Operations, Chief Revenue Officer, and Vice President of Customer Service.
