[edit]Rao made his directorial debut with 1972 Telugu drama film Neeti-Nijayiti. His 1977 film, Tharam Marindi won Nandi Award for Second Best Feature Film. In 1985, Rao's directed Mayuri, a biographical film based on the life of dancer Sudha Chandran. The film went on to win as may as fourteen Nandi Awards. Rao has also won Nandi Award for Best Director and Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu for the film.
In 1991, Rao directed Aditya 369 starring Balakrishna. The film claimed to be first full-length science fiction film in Telugu cinema and first ever film based on time travel in Indian cinema.[2][3] It was a massive commercial success, grossing over ₹9 crore on a budget of ₹1.6 crore.[3]
