Emergency Planning Ideals
[edit]A big portion of why so many people don't survive Hurricanes is because there is not much emergency planning that happens before the storm hits. In order to have an improved survival rate, preparation needs to start now. Although the storm is unpredictable, there are some things that can be done before to ensure a safer route for the community. There are things that can be done up to 36 hours before the storm hits, all the way until the storm is over and how to be safe after.
- Practice going to a safe shelter before the storm hits (figure out multiple routes to get there) - there is no problem being too safe, a lot of people don't know where to go, if there are a few places that can be used as shelter for the community, everyone should practice getting there and figuring out multiple routes to get there in case one route is unable to get through.
- If you are staying for the storm, make sure your emergency kit is full stocked; food, water, clothes, etc - there is never truly an understanding of how long the hurricane will effect the community, making sure you are full stocked will be a large benefit.
- During the storm, cover all your windows so the glass can't fly through your home - one way to get injured is by leaving windows open, with such high winds the windows will shatter.
- Keep your phone plugged in the whole time until the storm gets bad - after the storm you don't want to have a dead phone so you can't contact anyone.
- According to Ready.Gov, if the storm is 6 hours or less away from touchdown and you are not at an evacuation center, stay where you are - the biggest risk is going outside before the storm hits, with such high winds there is no saying what could be flying through the air while you are outside.
- If you are in a building or home, go to the highest story possible and stay there - make sure there is a way out in case the water gets too high.
The list could go on forever to give you knowledge on what you should and shouldn't do during the storm, but preparation is the biggest key for many people to survive. You can never be too safe especially during a storm like this that is so unpredictable, there are ways to stay safe and plan before to ensure you are kept safe.
