Infernal Terror is an Irish extreme metal band from Galway. Founded in May 2024 by frontman Andrew Brotherton on lead vocals and his then-girlfriend Sophia DeBrunner on keyboards and backing vocals. Originally envisioned as a grunge oriented project, it is currently made up of Brotherton (lead vocals, bass, keyboards), David Mullin (lead/rhythm guitars, backing vocals), Markó Sukhyi (rhythm/lead guitars, backing/co-lead vocals), and William Koljine (drums, percussion). It has gone through a few names before settling on its current name.

History

[edit]

Foundation

[edit]

Andrew Brotherton took a interest in becoming a musician around October 2023. Inspired by Nirvana and Foo Fighters, Brotherton originally wished to become a drummer. When telling his parents of his aspirations, they instead persuaded him to get an acoustic guitar instead.

Brotherton would form Infernal Terror on 12 May 2024, originally as Lost Dreams as lead vocalist. Envisioned as a solo project, Brotherton would add his then-girlfriend Sophia DeBrunner as its second member, playing keyboards and piano. Soon, the search for a guitarist, bassist and drummer began. Mateusz "Mathew" Krynicki, a friend of Brotherton and former frontman of the dissolved Sockborn, was added as guitarist in June, now called Horrid Hydrangeas. As the search for a drummer continued, Brotherton made the decision to learn bass, in addition to his role as vocalist.

July - December

[edit]

Brotherton and DeBrunner ended their relationship in July that year, she would leave the band. The announcement of her leaving mentioned the possibility of the band becoming a three piece of a bassist/vocalist, guitarist and drummer, soon this would be disregarded. 2 weeks later, Markó Sukhyi joined the band as rhythm guitarist, allowing Krynicki to focus on lead guitar. Brotherton acquired a bass guitar in August, now able to perform his duties as bassist of the group. Sukhyi was also given responsibility of backing and co-lead vocalist of the band the same month.

After two unsuccessful attempts at recruiting a drummer, Sukhyi offered to quit guitar and play the drums. Reluctant, Brotherton instead asked his friend Aaron Walsh, who had recently developed an interest in drums, if he’d be willing to learn them and join the band. Agreeing to this, Walsh would begin his look at drums, eventually deciding on electric drums. Sukhyi would take on additional duties as keyboardist in October as well.

That same month, Brotherton would start a side project entitled The Orion Pact, which is largely an electronic and experimental project based around his previous love of electronic and house music. He started this whilst staying as frontman of his primary band. Progress on songs for a demo would continue throughout October and November. Obscene was formed by lead guitarist Mathew Krynicki for his school talent show with other students in the school.

In December, Walsh began learning drums, fully becoming an official member of the band as its fourth member. Krynicki would assume backing vocals as well, and Adam Nagajek, drummer of TaLLLon, was brought on as a touring musician. By the end of the month, this arrangement had broken down. Krynicki was kicked out of the band, for allegedly refusing to communicate with other members, caused by his disagreement on the band going from grunge-inspired alternative music to extreme metal. He was replaced by Christian Tuohy, a friend of Brotherton’s. Following Tuohy’s addition, the band continued its evolution to a heavier and aggressive sound.

January - April 2025

[edit]

Markó Sukhyi would help found the all-Slavic band Szlachta in January 2025 alongside 5 others as its lead guitarist, contrasting with his concurrent role of rhythm guitarist of his original band. In February, the band would finally begin to plan performing live, though presumably not under their then name of Horrid Hydrangeas.

The band would change its name to Exhumation in March, with a stated reason of frontman Brotherton unable to pronounce the bands name properly. Sean Marlowe would join the band, replacing Aaron Walsh, as Walsh was uninterested in performing with a band and preferred drumming alone. That same month Brotherton would join fellow Galway heavy metal band Blackwater to fill in for a gig on bass and lead vocals.

Changes of line up

[edit]

On 3 April, Sean Marlowe would leave the band, citing that he did not fit with the other members and the style of music the band was playing. Despite him saying he’d help find the band a new drummer, no one was found. Disappointed by this, Brotherton suggested to the band that they finish a few songs and make a demo using programmed drums to attract a drummer. Plans were initiated thereafter, with Blackwater guitarist David Mullen to help in its production.

After Blackwater’s first gig on 25 April, David Mullin and his Blackwater bandmate William Koljine would join the band as lead guitarist and drummer respectively, who replaced the band’s previous guitarist Christian Tuohy. Tuohy would leave amicably after Brotherton explained that despite having a good friendship, their working relationship was strained and would lead to long term problems. The band would rename itself to Infernal Terror to further symbolise the merger of the two bands. After the merger of said band, the group began fully investing into death metal, formally calling themselves such.

Musical style and influences

[edit]

Infernal Terror has been described by members as primarily death metal and thrash metal. The band takes inspiration and cues from genres such as black metal, post-thrash, sludge metal, grindcore, doom metal, hardcore punk, and gothic rock. In the past the band was simply described as "heavy metal", without emphasis on sub-genre, and also grunge, in light of the group’s early intended sound.

Whilst Brotherton performs the majority of lead vocals, Sukhyi is also given lead vocals on some songs, with priority given to Death covers, namely "Pull the Plug". Both him and fellow guitarist David Mullin provide backing vocals. Brotherton provides a range of vocal styles, including death growls, shrieks, shouts, and grunts. He is also noted for having a singing voice reminiscent of Max Cavalera.

A wide range of bands, spanning from grunge to death metal and gothic rock, are cited as influences or inspirations for the group as a whole, including but not limited to Alice in Chains, Autopsy, Bathory, Bauhaus, Carcass, Celtic Frost, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Darkthrone, Death, Deftones, Foo Fighters, Jimi Hendrix, Linkin Park, Megadeth, Metallica, Motörhead, My Bloody Valentine, Napalm Death, Nirvana, Pantera, Pearl Jam, Queen, Rage Against the Machine, Rammstein, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Slayer, Slowdive, The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, System of a Down, and Tool.
