Born on April 27, 1968 in Soldotna, Alaska, Gorton spent most of his childhood in nearby Anchorage, Alaska with his brother, four years his junior, Jefferey E. Gorton and their parents, James E. Gorton, Jr. and Janet S. Gorton. His father worked as a practicing attorney and the managing partner for a local criminal defense firm, Gorton & Associates and his mother worked along side her husband, serving as the firm's business manager.

Gorton attended Anchorage public schools, graduating from Robert Service High School in 1986 at the age of eighteen. Upon graduation, he left Alaska to attend the University of California at Santa Barbara and, for part of his four years as as an undergraduate at UCSB, he rowed competitively for the men's crew team. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree, Gorton spent a year abroad in Madrid, Spain - taking Spanish language courses during the day at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and teaching English to Spanish adults at a local language academy in the evening. He returned to the United States in 1993 to start work on his Master's degree in Business Administration at Pepperdine University (Malibu, California), which he completed two years later.

Gorton currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia and serves as the President of CCT Solutions, Inc. (formerly Customized Computer Training), a software training and consulting organization.
