Early Life and Career

[edit]

Cormac was born and raised in Lancashire, England. He began singing at an early age and joined the Halle Children's Choir in Manchester, leading to his first solo performance of "Walking in the Air" with the Hallé Orchestra at their Christmas show, Bridgewater Hall, when Cormac was 9. There then followed a short period as a Boy Treble with the Manchester Cathedral Choir whilst studying at Chetham's School of Music. Later, during the COVID-19 lockdown, a home-recorded video of him singing "Danny Boy" went viral, attracting widespread attention including that of Decca Records.Sky News, 6 December 2020

In both 2022 and 2023, Cormac was invited to attend Prodigy Camp in Washington State, a creative retreat founded by film director Rick Stevenson, known for the 5000 Days Project. There, Cormac was mentored by a range of professionals including singer-songwriter Chappell Roan, who supported him in composing his first piano-based original song at age 13.Cormac Thompson Official Site, 2023

Cormac has a classically trained voice and is also a multi-instrumentalist, playing piano (as evidenced in his version of "True Colours") and both electric and acoustic guitar, as well as composing his own music using proprietary software.

In 2021, following a mutual departure from Decca, Cormac began recording independently with Steinway Artist Dominic Ferris. This collaboration resulted in a string of singles, including covers of "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables", "Cinema Paradiso (Se)" and "Somewhere", which have attracted millions of streams across platforms, acclaim from the likes of Mike Batt for his cover of Bright Eyes, shares by Yusuf Islam (Somewhere), and almost 100 chart positions to date on Apple Music. Many of these tracks—produced in collaboration with Ferris, Hanhart, and Cohen—formed the basis of his semi-autobiographical second album, A Borrowed Gift (2023), which was independently released as a physical CDAmazon UK – A Borrowed Gift CD and digitally on major platforms. The album of 14 songs captures the transition in Cormac’s voice from treble (soprano) to adult baritone, offering a unique sonic insight into this pivotal stage of vocal development—a theme that also inspired the creation of his 2024 educational podcast One Boy, Two Voices with Dr Martin Ashley, a leading authority on boys' changing voices and vocal pedagogy. One Boy, Two Voices – Spotify
