Historical research and documentation using a forensic research process based on the Dautzenlein. Dautzenlein is the term for "the smallest unit of connection". Dautzenlein is pronounced and means, "Dots 'n Line", dots and a line, signifying two dots connected by a line - the smallest connection possible. The word, Dautzenlein, originated from the metaphor, "Connect the Dots", from the children's puzzle or game that uses sequentially numbered dots which are connected by lines to create a picture on the page. Metaphorically, by "connecting the dots" we come to see the big picture. When used generally, anything can be viewed as a dot and connected to other dots. In historical research, the most basic unit of history is the connection of a person to an artifact. Without an artifact, there can be no known history. Expanding from this, people, places, things, and events can be considered "dots" and interconnected to create a sketch or framework leading to a fuller understanding of the events of the past.
