Inclusive Cowboy Flag
[edit]
The Inclusive Cowboy Flag is a pride flag designed by Giovanni Bianchi, President of Vaqueros Arizona, in May of 2025 in the city of Phoenix, Arizona. It was created to represent the evolving identity of cowboys. It was inspired by the 2010 Bandera Internacional de Vaqueros LGBT, first introduced in Chihuahua City, Mexico at a vaquero event.
The 2010 design used the color blue to symbolize romantic love between two men. The Inclusive Cowboy Flag preserves that cultural foundation, but it modernizes and expands its focus to include a fuller spectrum of identities--trans, nonbinary, intersex, agender individuals, and historically erased individuals such as Black and Indigenous cowboys.
The flag also shifts from a local to an international symbol, now expressed in both English and Spanish to amplify its message across borders.
The flag is publicly available under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license and is hosted on Wikimedia Commons for open use.
Design and Symbolism
[edit]The flag has seven horizontal stripes, a forward-facing white triangle, and a black cowboy hat outlined in white. Each color holds symbolic meaning:
- Black (#000000): Strength, survival, and visibility—honoring Black and Indigenous cowboys.
- Old Glory Blue (#0A3161): Represents the open sky and the cowboy’s inner code of humility and respect.
- White (#FFFFFF): Gender inclusion—trans, nonbinary, intersex, agender, and fluid expressions.
- Old Glory Red (#B31942): Love in all its forms, protected by the flanking white stripes.
- Cadmium Green (#006847): Land, growth, and the cowboy’s environmental bond.
- Sepia/Brown (#704214): Labor, ancestry, and cultural roots.
The triangle is equilateral, representing balance, and points toward progress. The hat at the center is a reclaimed emblem of cowboy identity, transcending gender and heritage.
Cultural References
[edit]There's two Easter eggs in the flag, two very important references for the cowboy community in general:
- Green–White–Red: Colors of the Mexican flag, honoring the vaquero tradition and the flag’s birthplace.
- Red–White–Blue: Makes reference to the United States flag and the vast cowboy community all over the States.
Together, they reflect the flag’s border-crossing message: cowboy pride is international and it speaks many languages.
Usage
[edit]The Inclusive Cowboy Flag is free to reproduce and use at LGBTQ+ Pride events, rodeos, parades, and community spaces. It is also used by Vaqueros Arizona and other queer cowboy organizations during Pride Month and throughout the year.
