"Comedy" (Japanese: 喜劇, Hepburn: Kigeki) is a song by Japanese singer-songwriter Gen Hoshino. The song was written and produced by Hoshino, who co-arranged and programmed it with Mabanua. The song was released by Speedstar Records on December 27, 2023, as a double A-sided single with "Life"; both songs will be included in Hoshino's sixth studio album, Gen (2025). It was used as the ending theme to the anime film Spy × Family Code: White (2023) and follows the song "Comedy" (2022) that Hoshino wrote for the film's preceding TV-series. Musically, it is a mid-tempo J-pop ballad with a nostalgic-like sound that lyrically questions why people make memories despite the fragility of life.

Hoshino traveled to Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, to find inspiration for the song. Upon returning home, he fell into a depressed state where he was unable to write the song's lyrics. Themed around the word kōseki (光跡)—meaning traces of a moving light—he began to write about his current worries and struggles, which he believed started to match with the plot of Spy × Family. "Why" was envisioned as a follow-up to the lyrics of "Comedy", but the musical roots go backwards and take inspiration from 1980s R&B and 90s hip-hop.

"Why" was surprise revealed as the ending theme to Spy × Family Code: White on the day of the film's premiere. A pouch with illustrations of Spy × Family characters drawn by Hoshino were shipped with the single to promote its release; first edition discs contain footage of live performances. The song was received positively by music critics for both its lyrics and music. Commercially, it reached number three on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and took first place on Plantech's Japanese airplay chart, while the double A-sided CD single entered at number two on the Oricon Singles Chart and Billboard Japan's Top Singles Sales chart. An accompanying music video, directed by Kyōtarō Hayashi [ja], was released with the single and intersects shots of scenery with Hoshino singing.

Background and writing

[edit]
Gen Hoshino (pictured 2019) wrote and produced "Comedy" based on the theme of family. He was inspired by his personal experiences and the relationship of the Forgers in Spy × Family.

Spy × Family (pronounced "spy family") is a Japanese action-comedy manga series that began serialization in 2019. It follows an elite spy who assumes a fake identity as Loid Forger and becomes a family man as part of a covert mission. Unbeknowst to Loid, his wife Yor is an assassin and his adoptive daughter Anya a telepath; the series is focused on their lives and development into a real family as Loid carries out his mission.[1][2] Gen Hoshino, a singer-songwriter and musician, had recently finished reading the Spy × Family manga when he was contacted to write the ending theme for its upcoming anime adaptation.[3] The production team asked him to base the song on family, which Hoshino agreed to; however, since family had been the focus on several of his past works — such as his 2017 single "Family Song"[3] — he struggled to write the lyrics of the song's second verse. The writer's block ended when Hoshino went on a late-night walk with his own family: he was awed by the beauty of a cherry blossom and felt that his own situation linked to the family theme. He wrote the song's second verse about this experience.[4]

In a comment on Spy × Family's website, Hoshino said that he felt able to make "something completely different" than "Family Song" on "Comedy".[5] He married actress Yui Aragaki in the time since the earlier song's release, but said he unsure if this affected the message on "Comedy".[3][6] Hoshino drew inspiration from his own outlook on family and the one presented by the main characters of Spy × Family.[5][7] He described "Comedy" as a lyrical "turning point" for the writing of his sixth studio album, Gen (2025), on which the song is included. He recalled that "Comedy" was one of the first he wrote from his own perspective rather than projecting his feelings into a story.[8] After "Comedy", Hoshino wished to continue exploring personal writing and created "Eureka" (2025)—the album's final single—upon that premise.[9]

Musically, "Comedy" was inspired by early 2000s hip-hop[10] and follows the production style of singles like "Create" and "Fushigi" (both 2021) by taking use of digital audio workstations and keyboards.[11] The song was created primarily by Hoshino with two recurring collaborators, drummer Mabanua and guitarist Ryosuke Nagaoka.[12][note 1] Hoshino wrote and produced the track. He programmed and handled general arrangement with Mabanua, whilst Nagaoka arranged the background vocals; the three play all of the song's instrumentation.[13] It was completed within three to four months; while travelling for his acting work, Hoshino would bring a keyboard into his hotel room to continue work on the song.[7]

Composition and lyrics

[edit]

"Comedy is a ballad[14][15]—set primarily in the key of C sharp minor and a tempo of 88 beats per minute[16]—that plays for 3 minutes and 50 seconds.[17] A J-pop[18][19] and neo soul track, it features prominent analog synthesizers, programmed drums, and laid-back beats.[20][21] The instrumentation also includes regular synths (played by Hoshino), sampler (Hoshino), piano (Hoshino), Rhodes piano (Hoshino and Mabanua), electric bass (Mabanua), vibraphone (Mabanua), and electric guitar (Nagaoka). The song was mixed by Shojiro Watanabe, who recorded it with Shu Saida and Mabanua. Takahiro Uchida was in charge of the track's mastering.[13]

In the song's lyrics, Hoshino defines family as a bond of feelings and care, rather than a connection by blood.[18] Acknowledging the unusual circumstances of families such as the Forgers in Spy × Family, he sings that the family's life—their comedy—will nevertheless go on, despite any sorrows.[18][22] He details the happiness in everyday events from their "ridiculous" life: "Shall we hold hands and head home?/What should we eat tonight?".[18][14] In the second verse, Hoshino references the cherry blossom he had seen with his own family and expresses a desire to discuss its beauty with a second person.[8] He also sings: "The place where I belong [...] is something I had to create for myself", which Barks writer Fumiaki Amano believed alluded to Hoshino's development of his creative process and musical style.[12] The second-person pronouns anata (あなた) and kimi () are both used in the song. Writing for Cinra, Yui Kashima called such inconsistent usage of pronouns a violation of unspoken writing rules, but interpreted it as Hoshino's attempt to represent multiple perspectives within the lyrics.[18]

Release and promotion

[edit]

An anime adaption of the Spy × Family comics was announced in November 2021 by Wit Studio and CloverWorks,[23] who unveiled further details such as its cast in the following months.[24] On March 18, 2022, a trailer for the show uploaded to distributor Toho's YouTube channel previewed the series' opening and ending themes: "Mixed Nuts" by Official Hige Dandism and "Comedy" by Hoshino, respectively.[25] "Comedy" was released as a single for streaming and paid download by the Victor Entertainment label Speedstar Records on April 8, 2022, a day ahead of the anime's premiere.[26][27] The song was sent to Japanese radio stations at the same time,[28] and released to South Korean music platforms by J-Box Entertainment on April 11.[29] It is the fifth track on Gen, which was released on May 14, 2025.[30]

The single's cover—depicting the diffuse reflection of blooming cherry blossom flowers—was unveiled a day before the song's release.[31] Listeners who downloaded the song, pre-saved it to their libraries on streaming platforms, or filled out a special form on Line Music were entered into a raffle to receive a sticker hand-drawn by Hoshino.[31] A two-part series of audio liner notes were uploaded alongside the release, where Hoshino discussed aspects of the song such as its lyrics with music journalist Yoshiaki Takahashi [ja].[32][33] Piano sheet music for two versions of the song—intermediate and high-level—were included alongside "Mixed Nuts" on Piano Mini Album: TV Anime Spy × Family (2022), a collection published by Yamaha Music Entertainment.[34]

Spy × Family creator Tatsuya Endo has interacted with the song's promotion by retweeting announcement posts and sharing illustrations of characters from the series. The first of these was on the announcement post for the single's release, where he attached a drawing of Anya sleeping while listening to the song.[35][36] On May 15, 2022, Hoshino hosted the anime's lead cast of voice actors—Takuya Eguchi (Loid Forger), Atsumi Tanezaki (Anya), and Saori Hayami (Yor)—as special guests on an episode of his radio program, Hoshino Gen no All Night Nippon. After the broadcast, he drew illustrations of the actors' roles and other characters from the show, which were posted to Spy × Family's official Twitter account on May 28 and jokingly labeled as a "main visual". Endo responded with an image of a surprised Anya saying "It's better than I thought it would be...!", referring to Hoshino's drawing skills; Tanezaki also responded with a post in the speaking style of her character.[35][37] To commemorate the song's inclusion on Gen, Endo posted a drawing of Anya holding two copies of the album and sporting long black hair and sunglasses, referencing the attire of Hoshino's stage character Akira Nise.[35]

Official video

[edit]
The "Comedy" music video features colorful coordination and depicts Hoshino in an everyday life with a family of puppet creatures.

The "Comedy" music video was directed by visual creator MESS with the production studios Koe. Inc and Dash, and premiered to YouTube on May 5, 2022.[38] In the colorfully coordinated video, Hoshino lives everyday life with a family of mysterious puppet creatures.[39][40] Conceptually, Hoshino wanted to make a fun video in contrast to the song's lyrics, where he thought listeners could find a deeper message on the meaning of family. Production began when MESS approached him with concept art and proposals for the video's camerawork. Hoshino suggested the idea of representing a family using hand puppets, which MESS agreed with.[41] MESS led the character design of the puppets, who were built and controlled by the staff of Studio Nova.[42]

The video approached five million views within two weeks of release[43] and surpassed thirty million views in October 2024.[5] A behind-the-scenes video—showing Hoshino playing with the puppets and other footage of the video's set—was uploaded on May 19, 2022.[39] To promote its inclusion in the video collection album Music Video Tour 2: 2017–2022 (2022), the puppets from "Comedy" were placed on display at the Tower Records store in Shibuya, Tokyo.[44] In December 2024, toggleable audio commentary by Hoshino and frequent collaborator Santa Yamagishi was added to the official video using YouTube's multi-language audio tracks feature.[45]

Anime ending sequence

[edit]

video icon "Comedy" (Spy × Family ending sequence) on YouTube

The ending sequence in Spy × Family that uses "Comedy" was storyboarded and directed by animator Atsushi Nishigori [es], who had previously served as director on anime projects like The Idolmaster Movie: Beyond the Brilliant Future! (2014) and Darling in the Franxx (2018).[46] The video is synchronized to the rhythm of "Comedy" and presents the world of the anime from the perspective of Anya Forger.[46][47] The sequence is opened in a hallway that highlights items that were absent in Anya's life until her adoption. After she traverses through locations such as a spy agency or crossword puzzle that represent her new family's life, she reunites with her parents and returns home. The sequence ends with Anya and her parents dancing at their house.[48][49]

The sequence was first used in the third episode of Spy × Family broadcast April 23, 2022, and was released to YouTube without its credits on the same day.[50] In addition to the song's nomination for Best Anime Song at the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, the scene was nominated for Best Ending Sequence, which it won.[51][52] Angela Davis for Screen Rant thought the scene successfully conveyed Anya's perspective using visuals alone, and considered its animation among the best out of the show's various theme song sequences.[49] In a listicle for the same site, Ben Sockol ranked it as one of the five best anime ending sequences of 2022 and praised Hoshino's song as a "perfect" soundtrack to Anya's antics.[48] Both called the concluding dance scene its highlight; Davis described it as "heartwarming".[48][49]
