Importance Criteria
 Top 
 High 
 Mid 
  • DfT Category B and C stations, for example Clapham Junction and Plymouth.
  • Former mainline stations (excluding halts)[7] or former branch termini.[8]
  • Trains currently in use on the National Rail network.[9]
  • Named trains and passenger services that are somewhat notable but not very culturally significant.
  • Important railway lines[10] and closed mainlines.[11]
  • All UK operators that ran trains on more than just a private branch.
  • Historically significant infrastructure that is not culturally significant[12]
 Low 
  • DfT Category E and F stations, for example Winchelsea and Boston.
  • Closed stations that do not qualify for mid-importance.
  • Non-significant trains that are not currently in use on the National Rail network.
  • Named trains and passenger services that do not qualify for mid-importance
  • Other railway lines (e.g. small branches)
  • UK prospective operators (e.g. VirginTrains' open-access proposal) or minor private operators of branch lines.
  • Other infrastructure

  2. ^ Great British Railways is currently mid-importance because it only contains SWR. By the time it is formally established in 2027(?) it will be top-importance.
