Lyrics and composition

[edit]

"Dark Til Daylight" is a country song that features Wallen singing at a faster pace than usual.[3] Lydia Farthing of Holler considered Wallen to be "using his signature rap-like cadence across the nearly four-minute mid-tempo, country rocker.[3] Additionally, "Dark Til Daylight" has a BPM of 122, a running time of 3 minutes and 56 seconds, with an A key and a minor scale.[4] The song was written by Rocky Block, Chris Tompkins, and Jimmy Robbins—while being produced by Charlie Handsome and Joey Moi.[1][2]

The song begins finding Wallen down in the dumbs as he gets cross-faded and can't seem to get a former partner off of his mind—being a while since him and his partner split and that he's doing decently well at getting over her, but he again feels as if he's at the bottom point of his life.[3] To further support the explanation of the song's introduction, the lyrics are "When I'm sittin' here alone / Gettin' drunk and gettin' stoned / I'm thinkin' 'bout you / Been a hard wall to climb / Swear to God I'm doing time / Here without you / Sun's sinkin' low / Here we go / Another shadow to fight through / That's what I do / A whole damn night through."[3] Later in the song, namely the next verses and the chorus, Wallen blends into physical intoxication that's emotionally unraveling and the chorus falls deeper into Wallen's emotional and mental state.[5]
