"Stakeboard" aka "Skateboard (Uh Ah Ah)" is a 1977 single for German group Copains and also singer Benny Schnier. Both versions made the charts that year.

Overview

[edit]

The song Skateboard was written by Hans-Ulrich Weigel, Frank Farian, Stefan Klinkhammer, and Roland Kaiser.[1] Along with "Amigo Charlie Brown" and "Bin wieder frei", "Skateboard" brought Frank Farian considerable success.[2] With the kids being seen riding around on skateboards and being noticed by Roland Kaiser and Frank Farian, an idea for a song came about. It was Kaiser that suggested to Farian that a song should be made about the sport. The idea appealed to Farian and with Kaiser, Fred Jay and Hans-Ulrich Weigel, Farian composed Skateboard.[3] The song appears in the book, Skateboard Music of the 1960s and 1970s.[4]

According to the August - September issue of Trust magazine, issue #95, the song was on a list of "100 greatest singles of all time". It was also available as a phone ringtone.[5]

According to the 29 December 1978 issue of Bravo, Benny hadn't had a good hit since "Amigo Charlie Brown". His producer Frank Farian thought they should take advantage of the skateboard boom in Germany. At first, he was skeptical but afterwards he was glad he recorded the song.[15]

Lenore Somerset was a popular Australian folk singer in the 1960s. She recorded for various labels which included W&G Records, EMS Records and CBS Records. She was also an actress.

Background

[edit]

Lenore Somerset was the niece of Australian country singer Buddy Williams. In her early days she was known as Lenore Miller. She recorded five duets with her uncle which were released on the Regal Zonophone label.[1][2] She moved to Melbourne in the late 1950s. She was discovered by her neighbor who heard her singing over the fence. With his help, it led to television appearances and performing around town.[3]

According to a 1963 issue of Billboard, Lenore Somerset was likely the best-known folk singer in Australia.[4]

Some of the venues she appeared in locally include the Melbourne Jazz and Folk Center in 1963.[5]

Career

[edit]

By July 1963, Lenore Somerset's debut album had been released. It was speculated by Billboard that the album should secure a personal management contract with Woomera Music.[6] The album, Lenora Somerset Sings featured fourteen songs which included "All My Trials", "Moreton Bay", "Andy's Gone with the Cattle", "The Ox Driver Song", "The Riddle Song", and Little Moses".[7][8]

Along with Judy Jacques, Hans Georg, Brian Mooney, Martin Wyneham Read, Kirk & Jane, Juan da Montagne (Spanish Guitarist), Somerset were to appear at the Melbourne Folk Festival on 9 April 1965.[9]

Somerset was pictured with folk singers Doug Owen and Margaret Smith in the 22 July 1965 issue of The Age. They were to appear in a variety show, televised on GTV-9 on the 29th. A song there were expected to perform was "Follow the Drinking Gourd which was described by the paper as an American Negro freedom song, which references a constellation pointing the way to freedom. Scheduled to be with them was Chris Beard and his sister Robina etc.[10]

It was reported by Billboard in the magazine's 13 November 1965 issue that Somerset had released her self-titled EP and was in the process of recording her third album release.[11]

According to the 16 July 1966 issue of Billboard, popular W&G Records artists Lenore Somerset was doing well with her low-priced album.[12] It was described by Cash Box as an interesting set of early Australian tunes drawn from old miner and sheep drover songs.[13]

With Normie Rowe, Maureen Elkner, Phil Lanham, Pauline Murphy and Danny O'Meara the compere, Somerset appeared on stage at Nui Dat, South Vietnam on a government sponsored show to entertain Australian troops. The event was held on 25 April 1969.[14]

Along with Graeme Thompson, Peter Carr, Peter Robinson, John Farrar, Pat Carroll, Doug Owen and Terry Walker, Somerset was part of a concert party that went to Saigon in 1970.[15]

It was reported by Cash Box in the 27 November 1971 issue that W&G Records had re-entered the singles race with Lenore Somerset's "Listen to the Man" record that was composed by David Langdon, a local writer.[16]

Dance band from Hadeland formed in 1970 by Kjell Bjørklund (guitar, vocals) and Ole Vidar Lien (bass, vocals). Other members of the first line-up were Arne Støen (organ, accordion), Øystein Hvalby (drums) and Øyvind Lysenstøen (guitar, vocals). The group made their debut in 1973 with a tribute album to ►Gluntan, where they interpreted 18 well-known songs from this band's repertoire. The album sold more than 25,000 copies, which gave Kjell Vidars the first of many silver record trophies.

Kjell Vidars followed up the same year with a Christmas album, which again had room for 18 songs. Before a year had passed, Kjell Vidars had made his third LP, and this time they had the opportunity to show what they really stood for. The menu was the same as would be used on all subsequent albums; foreign hits with Norwegian lyrics, as well as some songs provided by Norwegian artists. Many of the songs became regulars on the Norwegian charts, where they reached a total of 25 first places, and in January 1977 "Guitar Boogie" became number one on the European charts. The group also managed to achieve some popularity in Sweden, where they were described as "Norway's best-selling dance band".

The line-up was stable until 1979, when Jan Tore Iversen (drums) replaced Øyvind Hvalby. Three years later, Arne Støen and Øyvind Lysenstøen had also left. New members were Terje Eriksen (vocals, keyboards) and Asbjørn Furulund (vocals, guitar). Kjell Vidars was reduced to a quartet in 1984 when Furulund left. However, he returned a few years later, and the album Kjell Vidars går igjen (1992) was made with a line-up consisting of Bjørklund, Lien, Furulund, Iversen and newcomer Øyvind Myhre (vocals, keyboards). Leif Hemmingsen was the producer on the first twelve albums. On the last albums, Ole Vidar Lien took over the role of producer.

During his long career, Kjell Vidars sold more than 600,000 copies of his records. The greatest hits were collected in 2002 on the album Gjenhør med 20 glade år!.
