Sukth railway station is a railway station located in the village of Sukth, within the municipality of Durrës, western Albania. It is part of the Durrës–Tiranë railway operated by Hekurudha Shqiptare, the state railway company.
Location
[edit]The station is situated in Komuna e Xhafzotajt, Shijak, Durrës County. It lies near the villages of Borakë and Fllakë, approximately 3 km north of Shijak and 7 km from the Adriatic Sea.[1]
History and Operations
[edit]Sukth station was established as part of Albania’s post-World War II railway expansion and has historically served both passenger and freight traffic. It is located on the Durrës–Tiranë line, which opened in 1949. The station is positioned just after the Erzen River bridge, a notable engineering feature of the line.
In recent decades, the station has seen reduced activity due to the overall decline in Albania's rail usage. However, it remains a designated stop on the Durrës–Tiranë route.[2]
Modernization and Future Plans
[edit]Sukth station is included in Albania’s railway modernization efforts. The Albanian government plans to modernize and build 530 kilometers of railway network in the next 10 years, which will connect the north and the south.[3]
Additionally, a new railway connection is planned between Sukth and the Porto Romano industrial port, enhancing freight transport capabilities.[4]
Nearby Infrastructure
[edit]The station is in proximity to the Fllakë transmitter, a significant broadcasting facility in the region.[5]
