Ma Yimu
[edit]Ma Yimu (born Ma Yong) is a Chinese writer, screenwriter, and cultural entrepreneur. He is best known as the screenwriter of the award-winning animated short Globby the Dragon, and for his editorial leadership in influential Chinese publications. Ma co-founded the literary magazine Du Chang Tuan (《独唱团》) and the mobile reading app ONE (一个) in collaboration with Chinese writer and cultural figure Han Han. He has played a significant role in shaping contemporary Chinese digital culture and media.
Film and screenwriting
[edit]Ma Yimu is the screenwriter of the animated short film Globby the Dragon 地图龙(2023), The film follows a lonely dragon trying to fit into a human world that both fears and misunderstands him. It blends fantasy, identity, and childhood imagination.
Ma is credited as the film’s screenwriter on IMDb, and the film is distributed by Premium Films, a European short film agency.
Career
[edit]Ma began his career in journalism and publishing. He was the executive editor of Du Chang Tuan (《独唱团》), a widely influential literary magazine launched by Chinese author Han Han in 2010.[1] The magazine was known for its bold voice and critical tone during a time of rapid social change in China.
He later served as the Features Director of the Chinese edition of Esquire magazine (《时尚先生》), where he led in-depth editorial features on leading public figures and cultural issues.[2]
In theatre, Ma served as the chief producer of the multimedia stage play 《寻常》, which was performed more than 300 times at the Laoximen Theater in Changde. Directed by Ma Junfeng, the production combined documentary film, interviews, and live performance to portray life in China’s smaller cities. It was covered by major publications such as Southern Weekly[3] and China Daily.[4]
Cultural entrepreneurship
[edit]In 2012, Ma was the executive editor and product developer of ONE (一个), a mobile reading app created by Han Han’s team. The app curated daily literary selections from both emerging and established Chinese writers. Under Ma’s leadership, ONE quickly became one of the most influential digital reading platforms in China, reaching tens of millions of users.[5][6]
In 2014, Ma founded Shortcool (短裤视频), also known as *Ditto*, one of China’s earliest mobile-first short video apps. The platform received angel investment from IDG Capital and was among the first in China to explore algorithm-driven mobile video distribution.[7]
