Hatty Jones (born 21 July 1988)[1] is an English actress and playwright. She is best known for playing the titular character in the 1998 film Madeline, before returning to acting after her education.
Early life and education
[edit]Jones was born in London on 21 July 1988.[1] She grew up in Muswell Hill in North London.[2][3]
Jones attended Channing School in Highgate[3][4] and an after-school drama school, from which she heard of auditions for Madeline.[3][5] After the film, Jones studied a three-year acting degree at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, finishing in 2010.[3][6]
Career
[edit]Aged nine, Jones was picked from among 9,000 applicants to play the lead role in the 1998 film Madeline.[5] Prior to being cast as Madeline, Jones' only performance had been at a school play.[2] Her performance was nominated at the YoungStar and Young Artist Awards.[7][8] In a review for the LA Weekly, Ella Taylor wrote that Jones was the "one great thing going" for the film, describing her as "a tiny Brit with currant-bun eyes full of forthcoming transgression".[9]
Following her success with Madeline, Jones narrowly lost out to Emma Watson for the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series.[3][10][11][12] After touring to promote Madeline, Jones took a break from acting.[12]
Returning to acting following her education, Jones played minor roles in episodes of British television soaps Holby City and Doctors.[13][14][15] She cofounded Heavy Wait Productions, a production company showcasing female creative talent.[12][16]
In 2014, Jones cowrote and starred in Offstage with Amani Zardoe, a twelve-part homemade webseries shot in Jones' family home about a pair of out-of-work actresses.[3][11] In 2015, Jones codirected the short The Silent Gangsters.[11]
In September 2018, Jones starred in That Girl, a self-written semi-autobiographical play about the anxiety of losing childhood,[17] which explored how differently her life might have been developed following her success as a child actress.[12] The play featured at the Old Red Lion in Islington.[5][17]
In 2020, Jones cohosted a podcast series showcasing other child actors.[18]
