Athletes Untapped is a U.S. company founded in 2021 by Gene Williams in West Chester, Pennsylvania.[1]Athletes Untapped serves as a online platform for connecting athletes with vetted private sports coaches.
History
[edit]Athletes Untapped was founded in 2021 by Gene Williams, initially serving the Philadelphia region. The company began as a local effort to connect youth athletes with qualified coaches before evolving into a formalized digital platform.[2] In Spring 2023, Athletes Untapped launched its mobile app, introducing key features such as scheduling, messaging, and video feedback. The platform expanded to the West Coast in 2024. As of 2025, it maintains an active presence across all U.S. states.[3]
Services
[edit]Athletes Untapped operates as a two-sided online marketplace that facilitates private sports coaching for athletes. Parents and athletes can create accounts to browse and book coaching sessions by filtering options such as sport, location, availability, and price. The platform supports 16 different sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, football, and tennis, among others.
All coaches undergo thorough screening processes and are required to pass a background check. Once onboarded, coaches act as independent contractors and set their own hourly rates, typically ranging from $50 to $100 per session. Athletes Untapped collects a 20% commission from each session booked, with coaches taking the rest.[2]
Since 2022, Athletes Untapped has grown their coach network to host 2,000 active coaches across the U.S.
Founder
[edit]Gene Williams is a former basketball player who competed at Johns Hopkins University and played professionally in Ireland. After his playing career, he began offering private coaching sessions in the Philadelphia area, which later inspired the creation of Athletes Untapped.[2]
