Hello, my name is Melanie and I am from Kassel, Germany.
I'm openly trans in Wikipedia from now on
[edit]I am a person who was born with transsexual syndrome, that means i was born as a boy. This is actually something completely normal (just like being homosexual, bi, queer, lesbian or intersexual), if it weren't for the fact that in today's political world there are prominent men (Donald Trump, Elon Musk) and prominent women (JK Rowling, Germaine Greer) who cannot tolerate, accept or respect people like me. After 23 years, when I gave my first (and only) CSD speech as a transsexual woman, I had hoped that mankind would have become much more open-minded by now (which works very well for me in my private setting). After two failed attempts to come out (in 1994 and 1997) and a final coming out (in 2000), I finally managed to live entirely as a woman. I began my socialisation as a woman and feminist, which continues to this day, I started hormone replacement therapy, which I will continue until my death. I had my first name changed in 2001, I had my major gender reassignment surgery in 2003, followed by further surgeries (e.g. vocal cord surgery) until 2006. In 2004, I finally had my civil status changed, which ensured that I am legally recognised as a woman (i.e. I got a ‘female’ in the birth register) and was then able to have all my certificates changed. I underwent four years of assessment under the old German TSG (Transsexualities Act) and four years of in-depth analysis (psychotherapy), only to learn years later that gender dysphoria is not a mental disorder of gender identity at all, but a congenital incongruence of gender identity (ICD 11). I have been a Wikipedia contributor since July 2005. After completing my transition, I wanted to have nothing more to do with the topic of trans, but to live a normal life as a woman (which I do in real life because I have good passing (vocally and visually). This brings me back to the topic: Why a new outing as trans? Well, it has something to do with my tremendous empathy and solidarity with trans women, trans men, non-binary people because I was an outsider during a long time of my life. I want everyone to be able to live happily and without fear or threat from others, I want everyone to be able to harmonise their yin and yang, I want trans identity to no longer be politicised, but to be seen as something normal. We are currently living in brutal times, where states are beginning to make life hell for transsexual people (e.g. the UK and the USA, and if the AfD comes to power, Germany too). This is leading to the internet also taking an increasingly radical stance towards transsexual people, because radical people do not value human rights (and if they do, then only their own). Eve Ensler (for me one of the greatest women's rights activists of the last 40 years) and co-founder of the V-Day movement once said: ‘Inclusion means listening to our differences and recognising everyone's right to speak freely about their reality, free from oppression, bigotry and silence.’ I want to encourage transsexual people to become visible and stop hiding just because they are afraid of society. I want to make a difference and no longer stand idly by and watch as transsexual women become victims of violence, as numerous African American women in the USA, as numerous trans women in Mexico (the highest number of murdered trans women worldwide according to Trans Murder Monitoring by Transrespect) or like the transsexual Brianna Ghey, who was brutally murdered by two radicalised youths on 11 February 2023 at the age of 16. I am glad that we have friends and allies in the cis world. My parents, who are no longer alive, were very supportive, even though my father came from a Muslim background. My brother is supportive, my aunt, who passed away this year, was supportive, and I have cis men and cis women who have become my friends. That and my work on Wikipedia have given me a normal life that I can be very proud of and have shown me that I am a valuable person, even though I am different from you. I use the term transsexual because that's what I grew up with. I know that today it is called transgender or transidentity. But for me, transsexuality is not an expression of my sexual orientation, but an expression of my soul.
Here's to another 20 years of working with Wikipedia. All the best to all of you who have supported me here. I am very grateful to you for that.

You've done admirable work with Wikipedia:WikiProject Extinction since it's inception, and it wouldn't be anywhere near what it is without your invaluable work. Thanks for all you have done, and all I hope that you plan to do in the future. -- Peter Maas\talk 19:07, 8 October 2008 (UTC)(UTC) |
