  • Eskimo snow terms
    • doesn't mean English speakers can't see the differences in snow types
    • we also have different terms, they just aren't single lexical items
    • these differences in lexical distinction can often be traced to cultural differences (i.e. Eskimos more often need to distinguish snow types)
    • To question the validity of Whorf's conclusions regarding lexical items, Lenneberg and Brown explore the Eskimo snow term example
  • Structure
    • structural categories cannot correspond to cognitive categories because the distinctions are often arbitrary (i.e. gender), doesn't signify anything to a speaker or listener
