Makoto Nishimoto (Japanese: 西本 誠, Hepburn: Nishimoto Makoto, born August 14, 1986) is a former Japanese politician. He is also known for his nickname "Super Crazy-kun" (スーパークレイジー君). He was elected as city councilor of Toda, Saitama in 2021 but later the city election commission invalidate his winning after violating the Japanese Public Offices Election Law. He was then elected as city councilor for Miyazaki City. He resigned after being arrested for sexually assulting a female acquaintance in September 2023. He was charged with sexual assualt in May 2024.

Early life

Nishimoto was born on August 14, 1986 in Miyazaki city, Miyazaki Prefecture.[2] His father is part of a yakuza gang and his mother left him when he was one year old. He grew up with his grandmother. He joined a bōsōzoku gang and was sent to juvenile detention centers three times when he was in third year in middle school. In an interview with The Tokyo Shimbun, he said that when he was in detention for the third time, he could not see his grandmother before she died which led him to change his heart.[3]

Political career

Tokyo gubernatorial election

He moved to Tokyo when he was 21 and worked as a club employee and caregiver in Ginza. He also worked as a singer and was performing in live concerts. He run for the 2020 Tokyo gubernatorial election because he wanted to "raise his profile". He run under his nickname "Super Crazy-kun" but it was rejected and was allowed to run under the his real name. He lost the election only garnering 11,900 votes.[4][3][5]

Toda city councilor (2021-2020)

He then decides to run for city councilor for Toda city, Saitama Prefecture, where he run again as his nickname "Super Crazy-kun" and was allowed by the city election commission. He campaign while wearing a kamikaze uniform. He won garnering 912 votes and placing 26th out of the 36 seat the city have. He was addressed as "Super Crazy Councilor (スーパークレイジー君議員) during the prelimenary session.[6][5][4]

Toda City Election Commission received various complains from the people claiming that he did not live in the city for more than three months as required by the Japanese Public Offices Election Law. Nishimoto denied it stating in various interviews that he move to an apartment in city in late September 2020 and moving hismoved his residency from Tokyo's Chūō ward to Toda City on October 5, 2020 to run for the election.[7][8] On April 9, the city election commission invalidate his win stating that the apartment where he lived since September 2020 was still in someone else's name and failing to prove that he actually lives in the city.[9][3][10] Nishimoto replied in an interview with Sankei Shimbun that he went to the house in Tokyo where his wife and children live, but "he slept in Toda City". He filed a lawsuit on April 13 at the Saitama Prefectural Election Commission against the city election commission but later overturned in July.[11][7] He then an appeal in July to the Tokyo High Court to have the ruling overturned but later dismissed the lawsuit.[12][13][14] He then announced that he will filled an appeal in Supreme Court of Japan on October 15 but later rejected it on March 4, 2022.[15][16] On March 9, Toda city election commission officially invalidate his winning.[17]

Mayoral election

He decide to run for mayor of Toda city after the incumbent mayor Fumihito Sugawara was uncontested. He lost the election by a wide margin garnering only 2,529 votes against his opponent's 37,092 votes.[18][19]

He entered Nihon University in April 2022 in the Faculty of Law, Department of Politics and Economics. He said that he decided to not for the Japanese House of Councillors.[20]

Miyazaki gubernatorial election

In November 2022, Nishimoto announced that he will be running as the governor of Miyazaki Prefecture. He run against incumbent governor Shunji Kōno, former governor Hideo Higashikokubaru and former House of Councillors member Yoshiro Yokomine.[21][22][2] He lost the election only garnering 7,679 votes.[23][24]

Miyazaki City Councilor (2023-2024)

In January 2024, he announced that he will be running for councilor of Miyazaki City.[25] He won the election after garnering 4,195 votes, the second highest among the councilors.[24]

On September 6, 2023, he was arrested after alledgely sexually assulted and injuring a female acquaintance on September 3.[26][27] Nishimoto denied this allegation and apologize to his supporters.[28][29] On September 11, Miyazaki City Council unanimously passed a resolution to recommend his resignation but according to his lawyer, Nishimoto did not want to resign.[30][31] On September 11, a resolution was submitted to the Miyazaki City Council recommending the resignation of Nishimoto , which was passed unanimously after a vote . According to his lawyer, Nishimoto has indicated that he will not resign from his seat as the council member.[32][33][34]

On September 27, the Miyazaki District Public Prosecutors Office indicted Nishimoto on charges of non-consensual sexual intercourse resulting in injury.[35] On the same day, at a press conference held at Miyazaki City Hall, Nishimoto's lawyer revealed that he had generally admitted to the charges. However, he stated that "he did not use strong violence, and he did not remove her clothes," and that he would seek the lesser charge of non-consensual indecent assault at the trial.[36][37] On December 26, the Miyazaki District Court ruled to grant bail to Nishimoto.[38] On February 22, 2024, Nishimoto resign as councilor.[39] On May 21, the Miyazaki District Court sentenced Nishimoto to four years and six months in prison.[40][41]
