The Fermi surface is the sphere of constant radius at the Fermi energy plotted across the range of k wavevectors known as the First Brillouin zone. [1][2] The theory of the Fermi surface is developed from the Free electron model which calculates the filled and unfilled energy of states in a periodic, crystalline lattice. This is done by assuming the electron moves freely through the lattice and by using the kinetic energy of the moving electron and the potential the electron experiences from the atoms of the lattice to determine the wavefunction of the electron and calculate the electronic energy bands.[1] The Fermi surface can be used to predict electronic properties as it defines the filled and unfilled bands in three dimensional materials.[2]
