Duaa Sharaf (Arabic: دعاء شرف) was a Palestinian radio journalist and presenter for Al-Aqsa Radio in Gaza. She was killed on October 26, 2023, in an Israeli airstrike during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, along with her child. Her death has been cited by press freedom organizations and global media as part of the heavy toll on journalists during the conflict.
Career
[edit]Duaa Sharaf worked as a radio presenter for Al-Aqsa Radio, a Gaza-based station affiliated with Hamas.[1] She was known for producing religious and social programming that aired across the central Gaza Strip.[2]
Death
[edit]On October 26, 2023, Duaa Sharaf and her daughter were killed when an Israeli airstrike struck their home in Al-Zawaida, in the Deir al-Balah Governorate of Gaza.[3][4]
Her death was confirmed by several press freedom organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ),[5] and the Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ).[1]
Sharaf was one of dozens of Palestinian journalists killed during the Israel–Hamas war of 2023–2024.[6] Her death drew attention from international news organizations, including The Washington Post, which included her in its ongoing documentation of journalist fatalities in Gaza.[7]
Reactions
[edit]The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) listed her among the over 130 journalists killed in Gaza, calling for an independent investigation into what it termed "targeted killings" of media workers.[8] Media outlets such as Prensa Latina and CounterPunch also highlighted her death in broader coverage of press fatalities in Gaza.[9][10]
Legacy
[edit]Sharaf has become symbolic of the risks faced by local journalists during wartime. Multiple media rights groups and women's press coalitions have named her in official reports and tributes.[1][8] She is one of the subjects featured in a 2024 ResearchGate report titled Media Genocide, which documents the deaths of over 125 Palestinian journalists.[11]
