Oscar James McCullough, Baritone

Oscar James McCullough was a distinguished baritone who performed nationally and internationally. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 17, 1922 and died at age 80 in Roanoke, Virginia on November 11, 2002. Professor McCullough was a 1948 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, http://www.bw.edu. Next he received a Masters of Music as well as a Performers Certificate from Eastman School of Music, http://www.esm.rochester.edu, in 1952. In 1984, he received the Baldwin- Wallace Conservatory of Music Achievement Award.
For 36 years he taught voice and music courses at Hollins University, http://www.hollins.edu, in Roanoke, Virginia. He also served as Chairman of the Music Department. His performances included American, German, French, and Russian art song as well as opera, cantata, and oratorio. He was frequently featured as a soloist.
Often his students went on to their own successful careers in singing and teaching. In addition, Professor McCullough coached and taught professional singers and speakers. His work created a legacy of scholarship and performance in vocal music. In 1988, an anonymous donor established the McCullough Voice Scholarship Endowment and Vocal Music Fund to provide scholarships for Hollins students with outstanding ability in vocal performance.
McCullough promoted the compositions of American composers John Duke, John Diercks, and Charles Ives. His repertoire included Schubert’s Winterreisse, Schumann’s DichterLiebe, and Hugo Wolf’s Italian Songbook. At Hollins, Professor McCullough encouraged integration of the arts with productions such as Street Scene, an American opera in two acts with lyrics by Langston Hughes and Elmer Rice.
