Honeybees - the Musical
[edit]
Honeybees - the Musical was an original musical written by Rebecca Duffy and Cat Walker, with music and lyrics by Dungareen Jean.
The musical was first performed in December 2011 to sell-out audiences at the Sallis Benney Theatre, in Brighton, UK. In June 2012, the show toured, playing to packed houses at Eastbourne's Underground Theatre and the RADA Studio Theatre in London. Written and performed by an entirely LGBT cast and crew, these performances raised £2600 for Allsorts Youth Project, a Brighton-based charity supporting young people who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans or unsure of their sexual identity.
== Setting and Plot ==
Set against the backdrop of Britain in 2011, with cuts to public services and civil unrest breaking out on the streets, the musical begins by introducing us to an ageing Lesbian Hockey Team, the Brighton Honeybees, who are struggling to attract enough players to make up a team and to gain sponsorship from local businesses so that they can replace their tired old hockey kit.
The team's fortunes change after they are joined, firstly, by Ellie - a young, fit, teenager (referred to by the rest of the team simply as 'the Babydyke')and secondly by Julie - an ex-England International Hockey player who, after a promising early career, had given up the game entirely for 10 years following a disastrous sudden-death penalty miss in the 2001 World Cup Final. Julie is tempted out of her retirement when she discovers that her heartthrob, the up and coming singer, Desiree McCutcheon, also plays for the Honeybees when her band, 'Des and the Desireables' are not touring.
