1 On March 23, 2015, Vallejo, California resident Aaron Quinn calls 911 to report the kidnapping of his girlfriend Denise Huskins the night before. According to him, they were woken up by laser pointers, blindfolded with goggles, and sedated before Denise was kidnapped for ransom in Aaron's car. The kidnapper, claiming to be monitoring Aaron, threatened to harm Denise if Aaron called 911 before paying ransom. After Aaron woke up, he attempted to negotiate with the kidnapper before losing contact, after which he called the authorities. Law enforcement, finding the story outlandish, accuse Aaron of having killed Denise after she discovered texts to his ex-fiancee. The kidnapper sends journalist Henry Lee an audio file of Denise's voice as proof of life, but law enforcement are suspicious of her apparent lack of distress in the recording.
Two days after disappearing, Denise reappears at her father's house in Huntington Beach, four hundred miles from her home. The police release a statement announcing that they believe the kidnapping was staged and plan to prosecute the couple. Denise is branded by the media as a real-life "Gone Girl".
2 Denise recalls her abduction: After being forced into the trunk of Aaron's car, she was forced to switch cars before being taken to a remote cabin. On two occasions, her abductor recorded himself raping her. After two days of captivity, he drove her to her father's house and released her, threatening to target her family if she told law enforcement she'd been raped. Suspicion against the couple continues despite the consistency between their accounts and a rape kit proving that Denise had sexual intercourse while she was missing. She and Aaron are reunited. Lee receives an email from an unknown party taking responsibility for the kidnapping. The sender provides details and photos corroborating Denise's account and threatens to commit another crime if the police department doesn't issue an apology to her.
3 On June 2, 2015, Sergent Chris Shepard responds to an emergency call from a Dublin, California couple after a man breaks into their home, has an altercation with the husband, and flees after failing to rape the couple's daughter. Evidence left at the crime scene leads the police to disbarred attorney Matthew Muller and they arrest him at his family's cabin in South Lake Tahoe. While investigating the cabin, the police find sedatives, laser pointers, fake guns, and a blacked-out pair of goggles with a strand of blond hair stuck to it. Detective Misty Carausu investigates Muller's history of voyeurism and attempted rapes in hopes of finding the owner of the blond strand. She eventually learns of the "Gone Girl" case and notes similarities with Muller's modus operandi. Muller is arrested for Denise's kidnapping. An affidavit details the police department's failure to pursue leads and take into account evidence of the crime. Despite the police's assertion that Muller acted alone, Denise and Aaron remain convinced that he has other associates. In 2016, they sue the city for defamation and settle for $2.5 million. In March 2017, Muller is sentenced to forty years in prison. Denise and Aaron marry and have two daughters.
Centum
In 1992, a fictitious video company is preparing to launch the video game Centum, which features artificially generated levels created by the experimental AI program Beemkie. In the first level, the player takes on the role of an unnamed prisoner trapped in a cell. A mysterious boy identifying himself as a "Friend" offers to assist them in escaping the cell.
The setting shifts to the modern-day bedroom of one of Centum's developers. He is concerned with his young nephew Tim, who has recently begun using the name "Marmoset".
The third level is set in a playground on the outskirts of a city, where Tim himself is currently residing. Over the course of the several days, he meets 2A, Desmod, Valeri, and Elaine, a group of "Rats"— uncanny humans who recently escaped from a facility conducting experiments on them.
The final level is a blend of the three previous levels. Exiting the labyrinth, the player turns up at the Black River on the edge of the simulation. They meet a fisherman who explains that Beemkie created the simulated world in an attempt to satisfy the playtesters trapped inside, and he himself is content with this existence. He also speculates that the real Tim has long since returned to the real world; the "Tim" is the simulation is an artificial clone based on Beemkie's memories of him. As the player leaves the simulation, Beemkie appears to them and wishes them well. He also expresses hope that he may one day create a reality that the denizens may find happiness in.
