Question about an IP range block

[edit]

Hi HJ, Wikimedia UK is supporting an editing workshop for staff at Chetham's Library on 16 June. The IP address of the network they'll be using is caught in a {{school block}} for the range 82.219.0.0/16. As it's only anon editing that is blocked, we are advising people to create accounts beforehand but there are always some people who don't get round to it.

Is the block set to prevent account creation? And would newly created, non-confirmed accounts be able to edit through the anon only block?

It's expected to be a small event with a maximum of eight people, so it should be possible to come up with a workaround if needed but I though I'd check what the situation is. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 15:01, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Richard Nevell (WMUK) although it's quite a big range, it's a soft block with account creation allowed so you should be able to create accounts, and registered accounts (even brand new ones) shouldn't even notice the block. You just won't be able to edit without logging in. But you have my mobile number; give me a ring if you encounter a problem. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:03, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
