Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to animals. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. Scope and goals
[edit]This WikiProject aims primarily to describe, create and maintain articles on all animals, that is, all species belonging to the kingdom Animalia. This project's scope also includes zoologists and zoology-related articles.
Goals:
- Create and maintain articles about animals to an encyclopedic standard.
- Describe all families, genera and species of the kingdom Animalia.
- Maintain Category:Animals and its subcategories.
- Assess and rate articles under the scope of Wikiproject Animals.

Naming conventions
[edit]Common (vernacular) names are not capitalised (except where proper names appear).

[edit]For articles where a common name is used for the article title, the consensus way to write the combination of common name plus scientific name in the lead is (per this discussion):
- The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an even-toed ungulate mammal....
Namely, bold common name followed by bolded and italic scientific name in parentheses.
