NeonMerlin (talk · contribs) I'm considering self-nominating RfA over the holidays or early in the new year, once I get up to 3000 edits (just to placate those who use edit counts as criteria). NeonMerlin 05:07, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Reviews
- Review from Dar-Ape:
- Hello NeonMerlin! I have some suggestions for you, but of course they are just my thoughts and are not mandatory nor necessarily an accurate prediction of what may occur on your RfA if you do choose to launch it soon.
- You seem like a good editor overall, and your great number of contributions to the village pump and the reference desks is certainly impressive and demonstrates an eagerness to collaborate with and assist others. However, frankly, I don't think you're quite RfA ready yet, at least by the standards usually currently imposed on candidates. Regularly visiting WP:RFA will give you a good idea of what to expect.
- Firstly, your edit count is on the low end of scale for RfA candidates, as is your number of edits per month. This is not to say that your contributions are not valuable, but it remains a fact that statistics are a quick and easy way to get a handle on how much someone has contributed, and it could be difficult to convince some users of your contributions in light of your edit count.
- Additionally, you have participated in only 9 XFDs since the beginning of September (let me know if I'm wrong about this). While I personally do not consider XFDs to be extremely important if that is not what an admin candidate will be using his tools for, many users consider XFDs very important regardless and will want more participation in this area. I will speak more about your RfA after you answer my below question ("Why do you want to be an admin?").
- I don't consider 9 XFDs in four months to be too low. Maybe I could increase it to four or five a month, but to do much more than that would be to detract from my work on improving the X that isn't FD. NeonMerlin 22:53, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Your signature is a bit long. WP:SIG recommends a max on 200 characters, while you have over 300. Long signatures can sometimes make editing talk pages a little more cluttered and awkward.
- Thanks for the pointer; I've just condensed it from 315 characters down to 223. NeonMerlin 22:34, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- I hope I haven't sounded too gruff! You are doing a great job, but I just have some reservations about launching an RfA in the near future. I will speak more about this when you answer my question, if you should desire. Happy editing, and feel free to let me know if you have any questions, Dar-Ape 00:35, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Continuation Sorry I'm returning a bit late! Regarding XFDs, I myself think your participation is okay since you don't want to be an admin to close them, but many users who frequent WP:RFA feel that they are important for any administrator candidate because participation in them will give you a better grasp of policy in general-- all admins should be familiar with the project as a whole.
- Anyway, the choice is yours, but it is my own opinion that your need for the tools combined with your experience at this time are not enough to ensure success on an RfA in the very near future. However, you are certainly important, and you don't need adminship to prove that! You have a barnstar and were practically given one by an IP, and you have helped countless people on the Reference Desks. I think your userpage itself demonstrates that you are not a rank-and-file type anyway, even if someone was to think of you that way for some reason, which I don't think anyone does. Please let me know if you feel I have not addressed something, or if have any other questions or concerns. Happy Holidays, Dar-Ape 22:06, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
- I append again: Just noticed this on Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals). It is a small thing, but I would recommend not replying to other users' comments within the original comment (example, example), but rather keeping both comments whole and placing yours at the end. In the second exampe I gave, it could be unclear that "I am seeing two immediate problems..." was written by User:PullToOpen. Multiple points can simply be addressed by multiple paragraphs in your response. Cheers, Dar-Ape 22:42, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Questions
- Of your contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- I am proudest of my significant expansion and ongoing major cleanup of both Game and Pac-Man, because they're such major articles (game having over 1500 inbound internal links and being included in the CD Selection). I am also proud of having split Pac-Man (Atari 2600) into a separate article, substantially reformatting and expanding it.
- Update: I'm also very pleased to have created the entertainment reference desk. 22:51, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- I've been involved in several conflicts. None of them related to articles; one was about Wikipedia:Skill badges, another about the weather in London, and another about freedom of expression in the user namespace. None of these were ever resolved to my satisfaction; after waiting a while, I intend to eventually reopen each one. NeonMerlin 19:44, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- Optional question from Dar-Ape (talk · contribs):
- Why do you want to be an admin?
- Three reasons: First, every few weeks, I see a page that needs speedy deleting or protected moving, or a protected page that needs an edit. I'm tired of having to wait around indefinitely while the page sits with an {{editprotected}} tag. Second, adminship would give me some reassurance that what I'm doing on Wikipedia is distinguished and important, and that I'm not just a rank-and-file person. Finally, I'd like to be able to help the people who post an admin task on the IRC channel while I'm there and no other admins are (which happens every few weeks).
