Message
Hi, I'd just like to apologise if any of my behaviour seemed disruptive with regards to the Steve Rogers image. I never meant to be disruptive or edit-war, and I guess I was somewhat confused when the image was reverted, as I had thought there was consensus and that the sourcing was ok. I will try to engage constructively to sort the raised issues on the article. Thanks. IronManCap (talk) 16:48, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Super Dragon Ball Heroes
Hi Netoholic, I'd just like to mention that the series Super Dragon Ball Heroes isn't actually a TV series, it's an Original net animation (similar to Original video animation), so I moved it from Super Dragon Ball Heroes (TV series) to Super Dragon Ball Heroes (web series). Cheers.★Trekker (talk) 20:23, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

RfC on racial hereditarianism at the R&I talk-page
An RfC at Talk:Race and intelligence revisits the question, considered last year at WP:FTN, of whether or not the theory that a genetic link exists between race and intelligence is a fringe theory. This RfC supercedes the recent RfC on this topic at WP:RSN that was closed as improperly formulated.

Your participation is welcome. Thank you. NightHeron (talk) 22:46, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Newspapers.com Publisher Extra content?
Hello there! Last month, I made note that the following statement on the Wikipedia:Newspapers.com page, "Free accounts through the Wikipedia Library now do include access to Newspapers.com Publisher Extra content", doesn't seem to be the case for me. I'm unable to access a number of newspapers, including the St. Petersburg Times, the Miami Herald, and Allentown, Pennsylvania's The Morning Call. When I attempt to do so, I'm greeted with a message that reads "You need a Publisher Extra Subscription to view this page". How can I access these newspapers? —<span style="color:#0640e0; text-shadow:#66ff66 0.2em 0.2em 0.4em;">Matthew</span> - <span style="font-size:80%">(talk)</span> 21:41, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Newspapers.com access
Hi, Netoholic! Hope this finds you well. I am in the process of writing some articles using Newspapers.com. While the free access is pretty helpful on its own (I managed to write 9 GAs from scratch in five days), the OCR versions leave a lot to be desired, and it kind of feels like wringing blood with a stone with some of them (it takes way longer than being able to just click the image, and there are lots of references I just can't use at all). I submitted an application on September 2, but it hasn't been reviewed yet -- is there anything I can do to speed it along, or are there just a bunch of applications to get through? This free subscription gets you access to search newspapers but you will not be able to view the full page. Get a paid subscription for access."

I was reading a previous discussion of a similar Wikipedian who encountered the same problem, and it turned out because the e-mail used on the Wikipedia Library application was different than the one on the Newspapers.com account. Likewise, my account listed on the application was [email protected], but the Newspapers.com account had [email protected]. So I changed the one on the Newspapers.com account to the hotmail one and changed my username to birdienest81. I wonder if this should solve the problem.

Achieving consensus at Talk:Cross-country skiing (sport)?
Netoholic, you are invited to participate in a ranked-choice poll at Talk:Cross-country skiing (sport)#Ranked-choice poll of alternatives offered, which may help arrive at a consensus among the choices discussed. I have set up an opportunity for you to do so. Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 17:53, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

:Hi Netoholic, I understand your good-faith concern about WP:NOTVOTE, which says, "The words "vote" and "voting" have a variety of connotations, but they are commonly associated specifically with ballot-casting or majority voting." It goes on to say, "Different terminology (e.g. "seeking views", "polling" and "commenting") may be preferable." Indeed, what I have offered was a poll to help guide those participating in the discussion to consensus in a situation where none of the alternatives offered is "wrong"; there's just a question of preference among them.
: WP:NOVOTE goes on to state the "communal norm that it is "not the vote" that matters, but the reasoning behind the !vote that is important." I suggest that the reasoning has been presented over a range of similar alternatives, so the poll, complete with comment, helps focus the discussion to where a choice that people can live with emerges.
:I invite you to remove the collapsed format and participate. If you have a better path to consensus, I'm very interested in knowing it! Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 15:03, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Even at small resolutions or with large text, the effect is minimal (compared to many other things that look bad) and I think that top and left aligning it is good. Removing it from a table is a trade-off for those of us that will want to remove the box and colors in our personal CSS settings. == Requested move at Talk:Back That Thang Up#Requested_move_14_May_2024 ==
Please be WP:Civil. The reasoning is that it is still in discussion. Part of that discussion is layout and design. If each person drastically changed each template, then there would be a revert war. As there already was, hence the reason for the discussion. I proposed its change for quite some time before changing the template. I have no problem changing the template, but drastically changing it to a version that is not on the discussion, just means that it will be edited again later. Will you revert back to your version because you dont like the proposed version that had consensus? This is the only reason I reverted the change. I left a kind note on why I did, along with where the discussion is being held. These kind of things can be avoided with communication, which you did not do before changing the template. Until we actually close the discussion, it would be nice to actually participate in the discusion before changing the template. I am reverting it back, not out of spite, but only because it is currently in discussion. Thank you. <font color=#FF0033>&infin;</font>Who<font color=#00Ff00>?</font><font color=#FF00FF>&iquest;</font><font color=#0033FF>?</font> 08:16, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

I do not appreciate the rude comments. If you simply do not like the template, then thats fine. I have not been rude to you in the least. I reverted the template back to the semi-original version, that IS on the proposed discussion. You have not wanted to even participate in this, since I politely asked you to, instead you insisted on just changing the template to your liking. I at least took the time to discuss everything, as well as proposing the change to the template, to the entire Wiki community. I already stated that the template should probably be changed if it was going to be used on the talk pages, but I was waiting for other input, as one individual should NOT make this determination. <font color=#FF0033>&infin;</font>Who<font color=#00Ff00>?</font><font color=#FF00FF>&iquest;</font><font color=#0033FF>?</font> 08:29, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

Netoholic, I think that you need to realized that your "mentors" (or should I say mentor, since Kim has quit and Grunt is AWOL) are giving you enough rope to hang yourself. That means that you are still doing many of the things that have gotten you into trouble before, except that now with your mentorship, in a few of the bigger or more obvious problems &rarr;Raul654 will occasionally slap you on the wrist. Even when you are right (e.g. a template should be written this way instead of that way), the way that you go about things is all wrong (mostly revert wars without any discussion on talk pages). Eventually you are going to get another RFAR filed against you, either as a result of the collective outrage of everyone you have been revert warring against, or because you've finally run into a single individual who is more stubborn than you are. Here's my prediction on how the ArbComm will rule: Just as they've said in their Charles Darwin ruling that there is no "right" to continually do 3 reverts on a single article, they will rule that there is no "right" to continually do 3 reverts on multiple articles. They'll rule that it is just a special case of Incivility, because reverts "without any discussion" are like a slap in the face and are the equivalent of saying nothing in your edit is worth anything. Look, our past discussions over similer issues, specifically including other spoiler templates, have involved revert wars. Now maybe I was as much to blame as you. I didn't think so at the time, but no doubt you felt fully in the right in all you did. I've got to think that they way this one has been handled so far better is better, and I was quite honestly expressing my apprecation of your part in that fact. I really wasn't trying to be snide, and I'm sorry if it came across that way. On recent evidence, you don't think that revert warring is at all equivalent to murdering children. And really I don't either. This is a useful online project, it is not anyone's life I hope. 19:54, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

Message

[edit]

Hi, I'd just like to apologise if any of my behaviour seemed disruptive with regards to the Steve Rogers image. I never meant to be disruptive or edit-war, and I guess I was somewhat confused when the image was reverted, as I had thought there was consensus and that the sourcing was ok. I will try to engage constructively to sort the raised issues on the article. Thanks. IronManCap (talk) 16:48, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Super Dragon Ball Heroes

[edit]

Hi Netoholic, I'd just like to mention that the series Super Dragon Ball Heroes isn't actually a TV series, it's an Original net animation (similar to Original video animation), so I moved it from Super Dragon Ball Heroes (TV series) to Super Dragon Ball Heroes (web series). Cheers.★Trekker (talk) 20:23, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@*Treker: - Fair enough. I didn't see any episode lengths on the list - web series tend to be <10 minute episodes vs TV series which are 30-60m. -- Netoholic @ 20:29, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have not seen the show myself, but the IMDb page says the episodes are 10 minutes.★Trekker (talk) 20:33, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

RfC on racial hereditarianism at the R&I talk-page

[edit]

An RfC at Talk:Race and intelligence revisits the question, considered last year at WP:FTN, of whether or not the theory that a genetic link exists between race and intelligence is a fringe theory. This RfC supercedes the recent RfC on this topic at WP:RSN that was closed as improperly formulated.

Your participation is welcome. Thank you. NightHeron (talk) 22:46, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers.com Publisher Extra content?

[edit]

Hello there! Last month, I made note that the following statement on the Wikipedia:Newspapers.com page, "Free accounts through the Wikipedia Library now do include access to Newspapers.com Publisher Extra content", doesn't seem to be the case for me. I'm unable to access a number of newspapers, including the St. Petersburg Times, the Miami Herald, and Allentown, Pennsylvania's The Morning Call. When I attempt to do so, I'm greeted with a message that reads "You need a Publisher Extra Subscription to view this page". How can I access these newspapers? —Matthew - (talk) 21:41, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MatthewHoobin: - the expanded access is granted to our editors in annual increments. Looks like yours might be expired since your last upgrade was done in early 2020. If you want to renew, visit "My Library", click "My applications" and click the "Request renewal" button next to your previous application. Once we get that processed, your full access will come back for another year. -- Netoholic @ 01:59, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers.com access

[edit]

Hi, Netoholic! Hope this finds you well. I am in the process of writing some articles using Newspapers.com. While the free access is pretty helpful on its own (I managed to write 9 GAs from scratch in five days), the OCR versions leave a lot to be desired, and it kind of feels like wringing blood with a stone with some of them (it takes way longer than being able to just click the image, and there are lots of references I just can't use at all). I submitted an application on September 2, but it hasn't been reviewed yet -- is there anything I can do to speed it along, or are there just a bunch of applications to get through? jp×g 23:57, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it seems to have gone through -- I've been enjoying it a lot the last few days, and sourcing articles is a breeze! I don't know if you had anything to do with it, but if you did, I offer my gratitude. jp×g 06:48, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Access to you-know-where

[edit]

I'm once again getting the "You need a subscription to view this page" message from Newspapers.com, even though it's only been a few weeks since the last time I had to do this crap. Is their software that bad, or do they have IT people who don't really like us despite the millions of hits we must generate for them, or what? --Orange Mike | Talk 21:19, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Orangemike: Make sure you are logged-in and verify your account level at https://www.newspapers.com/account/ says "Plan: Complimentary Publisher Extra Annual". -- Netoholic @ 02:14, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm logged in, and it says my status is "registered guest." --Orange Mike | Talk 02:26, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Orangemike: Alright then, it might be you need to renew because Newspapers.com gives our users elevated access in 1-year increments. Go to https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/, click "My applications" and see if your last application for Newspapers.com was within the last 1 year. If it was, let me know, otherwise click "Request renewal" on your most recent application. -- Netoholic @ 02:55, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Status is "renewal submitted" from 2018. Clicked the "request renewal" button. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:02, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"You're currently a Registered Guest. This free subscription gets you access to search newspapers but you will not be able to view the full page. Get a paid subscription for access." --Orange Mike | Talk 05:39, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Orangemike: - Go to https://www.newspapers.com/account/ (make sure you are logged into their site). Under "Plan" what does it say? Also, does the email address there match the email address you gave in your application for this on Wikipedia Library? -- Netoholic @ 10:19, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
"YOUR PLAN - Registered Guest Limited Access - You can only search and browse newspaper archives." And the e-mail address I always use is orange mike atsign gmail dot com (with orangemike being one word). --Orange Mike | Talk 14:47, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Orangemike: That explains things. In your Nov. 19, 2021 renewal request, you gave your email address as "wikipedia.org" instead of "gmail.com". The renewal you put in yesterday has the right email, so I'll send out a corrected request with the next batch to the partner within a few days. -- Netoholic @ 21:29, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers.com renewal error

[edit]

Hi there,

I requested a renewal for complimentary access to Newspapers.com on January 8. However, I cannot access the full archive. When I clicked on "Account Details," it reads under the Subscription info, "You're currently a Registered Guest.

--Birdienest81talk 12:55, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Birdienest81: The request was submitted a few days ago but I haven't heard back from the partner contact. Please change your account there back to the original email address (gmail) until they process your upgrade, because that's the information I sent them. You will get an email from them once its completed. -- Netoholic @ 13:06, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Netoholic: Newspapers.com does not seem to let me change the email back to Gmail. When I up the gmail address, it reads "Email is already in use by another account."
--Birdienest81talk 11:17, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Birdienest81: Try doing a password reset using the gmail address. Maybe they made you a new account. -- Netoholic @ 02:30, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Achieving consensus at Talk:Cross-country skiing (sport)?

[edit]

Netoholic, you are invited to participate in a ranked-choice poll at Talk:Cross-country skiing (sport)#Ranked-choice poll of alternatives offered, which may help arrive at a consensus among the choices discussed. I have set up an opportunity for you to do so. Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 17:53, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Netoholic, I understand your good-faith concern about WP:NOTVOTE, which says, "The words "vote" and "voting" have a variety of connotations, but they are commonly associated specifically with ballot-casting or majority voting." It goes on to say, "Different terminology (e.g. "seeking views", "polling" and "commenting") may be preferable." Indeed, what I have offered was a poll to help guide those participating in the discussion to consensus in a situation where none of the alternatives offered is "wrong"; there's just a question of preference among them.
WP:NOVOTE goes on to state the "communal norm that it is "not the vote" that matters, but the reasoning behind the !vote that is important." I suggest that the reasoning has been presented over a range of similar alternatives, so the poll, complete with comment, helps focus the discussion to where a choice that people can live with emerges.
I invite you to remove the collapsed format and participate. If you have a better path to consensus, I'm very interested in knowing it! Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 15:03, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Renewing DS awareness

[edit]

Renewing since it has been more than a year since you were last alerted:

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in gender-related disputes or controversies or in people associated with them. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add NoACEMM to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your access to AWB may be temporarily removed

[edit]

Hello NetBot! This message is to inform you that due to editing inactivity, your access to AutoWikiBrowser may be temporarily removed. If you do not resume editing within the next week, your username will be removed from the CheckPage. This is purely for routine maintenance and is not indicative of wrongdoing on your part. You may regain access at any time by simply requesting it at WP:PERM/AWB. Thank you! MusikBot II talk 17:20, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers.com account not processing

[edit]

A while back, you sent a submission to the Newspapers.com. However, as of January 16, 2023, I still had'nt received an application back to the site. Is there anything that I can do atm? Yoshiman6464 ♫🥚 23:09, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You would have been contacted by email on Dec 22 at the .edu email address you use for your account on Newspapers.com. Can you check for that? -- Netoholic @ 03:52, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. But on the site, I changed by Email since I recently graduated. Yoshiman6464 ♫🥚 13:21, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but it looks like your Wikipedia Library application used the previous address, and that's what we communicated to the partner. They would have sent confirmation to that email address. If you have access to it, please check there. Otherwise, we'll need to provide your current account info to Newspapers.com. If you can't access your other email, then please put in a new application and fully update the account address to what you're using currently. -- Netoholic @ 15:35, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Source of Edmond Hoyle's portrait?

[edit]

Hi! This is a long shot, but do you by any chance remember where you found File:Edmond Hoyle.jpg in 2004? I'm trying to confirm that it's actually a portrait of the man. Jyamine (talk) 16:05, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Its a fair question, but my original upload was deleted, so I don't have anything to jog my memory. Perhaps there is something in the deleted history at en:File:Edmond Hoyle.jpg. @Maxim:, you were the deleting admin, would you be able to check the edit comments or page text for me to see if I provided a source? If there's nothing, then I'd be happy to help research it. -- Netoholic @ 06:56, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, no, there's absolutely nothing in the history:
(diff) 06:40, 4 November 2007 . . SieBot (talk | contribs | block) m 105 bytes (Exact duplicate on Commons with same name)
(diff) 04:14, 23 December 2004 . . Mattingly23 (talk | contribs | block) 13 bytes (added pd tag)
(diff) 04:35, 6 August 2004 . . Netoholic (talk | contribs | block) empty
After all it was mid-2004, and it wasn't particularly standard to systematically add attribution or copyright tags to images just yet. :-) Maxim (talk) 11:07, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks anyway! Jyamine (talk) 12:51, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the image from the en Wikipedia article as I'm more convinced its not genuine. Will have to look into renaming or deleting from Commons though. -- Netoholic @ 14:25, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
