This page is for nominations to appear in the "Did you know" section on the Main Page. Eligible articles may only be up to 5 days old, or significantly expanded beyond 1000 characters in the last 5 days.
A trial is being run after a discussion on the talk page. The template is now being prepared for the Main Page in advance. This will have the following effects:
After the update, anyone can replace the entries on Template:Did you know/Next update with fresh entries from this page. Make sure to follow the instructions below.
When you add an image to DYK, you must protect it and add {{mprotected}} to the image description page, or {{C-uploaded}} if you have uploaded a temporary copy from Commons (make sure you also copy the author attribution and the licence tag).
If you are an admin at Commons, you may protect the Commons version of the image, and add {{En main page}} there. However, you must also add {{mprotected}} on the English Wikipedia's image description page and protect the image here to prevent vandals from uploading a local version.
Don't forget to UNprotect the previously used image AFTER you change the template to the new picture.
If you remove a {{C-uploaded}}-tagged image from the template, please speedy delete it. Don't forget to immediately check the deleted history of its image description page and restore any relevant Wikipedia-specific edits, category links, and tags (such as {{FeaturedPicture}}) that were on there beforehand.
Instructions for "next update" editors
Make sure the entries conform to the rules set out below under "Suggestions".
If an entry is disputed, don't add it to the template until the problem is resolved.
Try to include items from varied fields of interest, time periods, and parts of the world.
Please disambiguate linked words in the suggestion.
Try to ensure entries are of appropriate length and make them more interesting, if possible.
Stale entries are no fun, but please try to give every entry the exposure it deserves.
After adding an entry to the template, remove it from this page. Make sure to include the date, nominator, and creator to allow others to return it if a dispute arises.
DYK queue status
There are currently 7 filled queues – all good, for now!
List new suggestions here, at the date the article was created (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If there's a suitable image, place it after the suggestion.
Remember:
Proposed articles should be over 1000 characters, cite sources (these sources should be properly labelled, that is, not under an "External links" header), and be no more than 5 days old (unless it was under 1000 characters, marked a stub, and has been expanded by at least an additional 1000 characters), and should not be marked as stubs. Articles with good references and cites are preferred to those that are not.
Suggested facts should be:
Interesting to draw in a variety of readers around the world.
Short and pithy (under about 200 characters).
Neutral.
Definite facts, mentioned in the article.
Suggested pictures should be:
Suitably freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) as the main page by policy can only have freely licensed pictures.
Attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px wide) resolution

Proposed lists should have two thing to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults) and (ii) have non stub text that brings out interesting relational facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
Please check back for comments on your nomination. Your entry may miss out on the front page if you don't respond to reasonable objections.
BACKLOGGED?
This page often seems to be backlogged. It is possible to go to WP:AN or #irc to try and draw attention to it, but this appears somewhat fruitless. If it does get backlogged, it may be useful to draw to its attention the administrators who have regularly updated the template. If any admin would like to be reminded of the backlog, they can feel free to add themselves! As such, administrators who have regularly updated in the past and upon whom haranguing may be effective are
I actually came across this one on Special:Newpages, but didn't nominate it as it looks in dire need of globalisation. I'd be kinda hesitant to feature it with such an obvious (though understandable) bias. I'd try to insert a section (even a tiny one) about how the subject is dealt with in at least one other geographical area (see protection of sources for about the minimum). Alternatively you could rename the article to make it clear that it only discusses how the right applies in the US, but this is kinda an iffy solution given that this is the main article on the topic. Not too good, I know, but I couldn't come up with a better wording. Feel free to attempt to rephrase. This is a rather old article that I just destubbed. Johnleemk | Talk12:39, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Two possible variants just from the article might be "that Bangsa Malaysia sought to create a unified national identity for all Malaysian citizens" or "that BM was criticised as being 'nebulous' and overstepping the Malaysian constitution". A third one, which I find interesting but which would only really excite anoraks would be "that BM was criticised for being a resurrection of Lee Kuan Yew's call for a 'Malaysian Malaysia'" (obviously Wikilinks would be added accordingly) BigHaz - Schreit mich an07:20, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Speaking for myself, I like it. It's the kind of thing I've just spent a fair bit of time studying myself, and the article itself does a good job of covering the important points of what is often a pretty tricky concept (ethnicity and race relations in Malaysia). I know it's kinda "sourced POV". I'll have a go at coming up with a better one tomorrow. Alternatives are more than welcome :) GeeJo(t)⁄(c) • 00:28, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is a FA-class article with some impressive free images. I hope they will not be dismissed in favour of some cheesy U.S.-made pictures, as mine have been since the institution of the new new updating system :) --Ghirla-трёп-02:01, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Added an image to the nom. I've also made a 100x100 crop which I'll upload closer to the time and redirect to the main image, as it's a bit indistinct at that size. GeeJo(t)⁄(c) • 15:15, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Minor suggestion: "...that the oldest modern human remains in Europe have been discovered in Peştera cu Oase (the Cave with Bones) in south-western Romania?" ("peştera" is Romanian for "the cave", which would turn the thing into "the the cave"). However, since the that is, more or less, the established name of a place, we need not translate it at all: "...that the oldest modern human remains in Europe have been discovered in Peştera cu Oase in south-western Romania?". Your call. Dahn22:09, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
of course, the latest version, because the most succinct. Thanks. (besides: redundant use of "the" in written English is quite specific for a moderate command...) --Vintila Barbu10:36, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
we are very lucky to have a large supply to DYK these days, which makes this type of article very short. Could you expand it please?
Not too sure there's much else to say about the location. I added a few more lines, but I wasn't able to find out much more else via a quick Google search. howcheng {chat}07:46, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I really nominated it for the picture (rather than another (yawn) black and white headshot) but if you want to drop it to clear the backlogs a bit I won't be upset. I don't think its unencyclopedic though - if the The Sun claimed he owned a brothel then maybe. Yomanganitalk01:43, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Stub. Main text is several hundred characters under the lenient 1000 lower limit. Also, the connection of the names in the nom didn't occur to me until I read the article (though I suppose that may just be me being dense.) If the article's expanded and doesn't produce another hook, I'd suggest making the connection to the phrase "Sweet Dreams" explicit in the nom. GeeJo(t)⁄(c) • 00:27, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Article has been expanded further, and is undergoing further expansion.
Based on the above suggestion, I propose this text:
The problem with this nomination is the article was not created recently, neither did it undergo any overwhelming changes in recent past. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:29, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is kind of funny, I think it would look great on the main page however are there any references or sources? I did not see any. If i am blind, then disregard this comment. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider)19:34, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Generally the precedent has been that lists have to be exceptionally well done to merit a place on the template, I'm just not sure this one is. GeeJo(t)⁄(c) • 02:27, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, I'm not sure. Could someone else weigh in on this one? If noone does by the time this expires at the end of today, I guess it'll be time to break out the old "Unused items" section again. GeeJo(t)⁄(c) • 01:43, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Lists should not be banned outright from DYK. I think a list should have two thing to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults) and (ii) have a lead paragraph or two that brings out a surprising relational fact or two from the compiled list that would not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation. I did not know enough about vaults to see connections between the listed vaults that would not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation. Thus, DYK was right to pass on the vault list, even though it met criteria (i). Filipino Olympic medalists meets criteria (ii), but does not meet criteria (i). However, the information is not merely listed, it is in a table and had medal images next to them. In any event, the text is stubby without the list.-- Jreferee04:13, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Quotations are excluded mostly because they're not text original to Wikipedia. And honestly if an article is relying on a block-quote to pass the minimum (which isn't the case here as it squeaks by without it), I'd be very hesitant in promoting it. GeeJo(t)⁄(c) • 02:27, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Optionally, move nominations here, along with the users' signatures, for later informing. Then, individually copy each question into the template. (Not all updaters use this so do not read anything into absence of items here; go by the update warning box.) Remove the entries when you are finished with the notification process.
Instructions to admins
Add the following templates to their respective places. Please make sure that if a template includes a date, that you change it to reflect the date the item in question was first featured on the main page.
