David Charles Baxter (Born April 19, 1964) is an American producer and screenwriter, with a broad portfolio spanning television and film. Since winning the 1997 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival with his first ever feature film Shooting Lily,[1][2] he has since gone on to produce documentary, biographical, and narrative films and series, as well as co-founded Nimbus Pictures,[1] served as vice president of Legion M, and founded Larger Than Life Entertainment in 2025.[3]

Early Career

[edit]

After receiving a degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan, he worked in corporate marketing before making the leap to media through a connection with Academy Award winning documentary director Errol Morris.[1] He then earned a master’s degree from UCLA’s Producer's Program.[4] It was through this program that he produced his first feature film, Shooting Lily, a romantic comedy which went on to win the 1997 SXSW Film Festival.[2] Shortly after graduating, Baxter became the Vice President of production at Maple Palm Pictures, where he developed and coproduced the thriller Ambushed in partnership with HBO.[1]

After selling his racing script Nuvolari to 20th Century Fox, Baxter officially became a member of the Writer's Guild of America.[1][4] In 2004 Baxter won the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation/Tribeca Film Institute screenwriting grant for his film projects The Broken Code and Face Value, science themed projects about Rosalind Franklin and Hedy Lamarr respectively.[4][5][6]

From 2007-2011 Baxter engaged his “nerd side”, becoming a copy writer for Sideshow Collectibles,[7] and working as the lead writer of Marksmen - a six issue post apocalyptic comic series and graphic novel published by Benaroya Publishing and Image Comics.[8] Around this time Baxter also formed Nimbus Pictures with producing partner and entertainment publicist Lisa Taback, with the aim “to produce thought-provoking entertainment for the 21st century”.[1][4]

2016-Current Day

[edit]

After 12 years with Nimbus Pictures, in 2016 Baxter shifted gears to bolstering the beginning of Legion M, a film production company allowing fans to directly invest in startup projects.[3][9][10] In an interview in 2019, Baxter explained the budding company; “For the last 80 years, unless you were an accredited investor... ...You couldn’t invest in a startup. It was absolutely not allowed. So this is revolutionary - democratizing law, that allows you to be getting the same shares that a venture capitalist would be getting.”[9]

With Legion M, Baxter produced and executive produced many projects, notable among which are the 2019 biography Excelsior! A Celebration of the Amazing, the Fantastic, the Incredible & the Uncanny Life of Stan Lee,[11] 2023 documentary on William Shatner You Can Call Me Bill[3][12], and 2024 comedy drama My Dead Friend Zoe.[3][13] In 2022, 2023 and 2024 Baxter led and participated in discussions panels at the Los Angeles Comic-Con and San Diego Comic-Con offering project information, Legion M insights, and "an inside look" at "what goes into creating independent films."[14][15][16]

In June of 2025, Baxter officially left Legion M to begin a new production company, Larger Than Life Entertainment, with an established docket of upcoming productions.[3]
