Biography

[edit]

Rowley obtained a PhD at The University of Lancaster in 2017,[1] specialising in veganism and human rights law. She is a vegan rights advocate,[2] independent consultant to The Vegan Society and a member of the Research Advisory Committee of The Vegan Society.[3]

Rowley founded the campaign for vegan rights and the not-for-profit International Vegan Rights Alliance in 2012 to educate the vegan community about the international human right to freedom of belief, and its importance in defending and protecting the rights of vegans.[4][5]

In 2012, Rowley was a speaker at the 5th Equality, Diversity and Inclusion International Conference, in Toulouse, France, where she presented her argument that veganism was relevant to the principles of equality and inclusion.[6] Also in 2012, she presented her proposal that vegans should defend their rights to live with compassion as a measure to support the campaign for animal rights at the International Animal Rights Conference, Luxembourg.[7] Rowley has been a speaker on vegan rights at various events since 2012 including at VegFest in 2013[8], the first meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Vegetarianism and Veganism in 2016,[9] at the CARE Animal Rights Congress in Vienna in 2017,[10] and Battle of Ideas Festival in 2021.[11]

Rowley provided expert consultation and was a witness in the employment tribunal of Jordi Casamitjana.[12][13][14][15] Rowley has been appointed witness, and granted leave to submit amicus curiae briefs in vegan rights cases, including in Peru,[16][17] Norway,[18] and Canada.[19]

Media reports show that Rowley is regularly consulted to support vegan complainants.[20][21][22][23]

In addition to devising the vegan rights strategy, Rowley introduced The Vegan Society’s Education function to support educators and protect vegan pupils from unfair treatment and discrimination.[24]

Selected Publications

[edit]

Rowley conducted the first ever survey on Vegan Equality in 2013.[25]

She wrote the first e-book on Vegan Rights: Questions and Answers in 2014, and chapter introducing veganism to human rights law in academia in 2016.[26]

She authored Towards a Vegan Jurisprudence: The Need for a Reorientation of Human Rights in 2020.[27]

She co-edited with Dr Carlo Prisco Law and Veganism: International Perspectives on the Human Right to Freedom of Conscience in 2022,[28] the foreword to which is written by the British sociologist Richard Twine.

She authored Seeds of change: The International Vegan rights Alliance and the Vegan Rights Revolution in 2024,[29] the foreword to which is written by Camille Labchuk, the Executive Director of Animal Justice. Rowley’s commitment to defending the rights of vegans as explained in Seeds of Change… is endorsed and commended by Gary Francione.

Rowley has written for multiple outlets including The Vegan Society,[30][31][32][33] the Animal Interfaith Alliance,[34] the UK Journal of Animal Law 2018,[35] Vegconomist,[36] and The Law Society Gazette.[37]
