He is the co-founder of IB2,[2] a company specializing in environmentally friendly technologies for alumina production, and has been instrumental in advancing green solutions within the aluminum industry.[3]

Education

[edit]

Girbal pursued studies in French and Spanish business law at the University of Paris X (Nanterre) and international trade at the University Carlos III of Madrid. In 2007, he earned a Master's degree in Business Law and International Management from HEC Paris. He later completed the Owner/President Management (OPM) program at Harvard Business School.

Career

Early Career

[edit]

Girbal began his professional journey in 2007 as a junior consultant in structured finance at Glencore in London, focusing on commodity trading and mining. In 2008, he became the head of the legal department at Harvest Energy, a road fuel supplier.

Alliance Minière Responsable

[edit]

In 2015, Girbal co-founded Alliance Minière Responsable (AMR), a French mining company operating in Guinea. AMR is dedicated to responsible mining practices, emphasizing environmental conservation and community engagement. The company attracted support from notable investors, including Anne Lauvergeon, Édouard Louis-Dreyfus, and Xavier Niel.

IB2

[edit]

In 2016, Girbal co-founded IB2, a French industrial technology firm aiming to revolutionize alumina production. IB2 developed a process that enables the efficient refining of low-grade bauxite, significantly reducing environmental impact. The technology decreases caustic soda consumption by 80%, cuts CO₂ emissions by 40%, and minimizes red mud waste by 67%. Additionally, it produces tobermorite, a by-product utilized in eco-friendly cement production.

IB2's innovations have garnered international attention. In 2023, the company entered a 22-year agreement with China's Liulin Senze Coal & Aluminum to implement its technology, marking a significant step in reducing China's reliance on imported bauxite. The South China Morning Post highlighted this development, noting the potential for IB2's technology to transform China's aluminum industry.

In 2024, IB2 secured a €100 million investment from Glencore and other investors to expand its operations globally. This funding underscores the industry's confidence in IB2's sustainable approach to alumina production.

Investments

[edit]

Beyond his ventures with AMR and IB2, Girbal has invested in various startups across sectors such as fintech, education, and e-commerce. He was recognized among the top 12 business angels under 35 in France by Angelsquare in 2018.
