Kang Taehyun (Hangul: 강태현; born February 5, 2002), known mononymously as Taehyun, is a South Korean singer and member of the boy band Tomorrow X Together (TXT), formed by Big Hit Music. He debuted with the group in 2019.
Early life
[edit]Kang Taehyun was born in Yeoksam-Dong, Seoul, South Korea. As a child, he wanted to be a boxer or a magician, but also dreamed of becoming a singer. To avoid drawing too much attention to his singing aspirations, he kept this dream a secret. However, he decided to take a chance by auditioning for singing, not wanting to regret never trying.[1]
Education
[edit]Taehyun attended Eonbuk Middle School and graduated from Hanlim Arts High School on February 9, 2021[2]
Pre-debut
[edit]Prior to his debut, Taehyun worked extensively as a child model and commercial actor from the age of 2. He appeared in advertisements for major brands including Dettol[3] and Samsung Financial Group.[4] He modeled children's clothing, including a campaign for Inner Children wear featured in Fashion Chosun.[5] He also modeled for Pororo children's laptop toy.[6]
In 2009, Taehyun appeared on a segment of SBS News related to children's growth plates, further showcasing his early media exposure.[7]
Taehyun was also a finalist in auditions to voice Sosuke in the Korean dub of Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo. Although he was one of the top two candidates, he was ultimately not selected due to slight pronunciation issues, attributed to having recently lost his baby teeth.[8]
He also appeared in several English-language educational videos (Tun-Tun English) for children starting in 2007.[9][10][11]
A fan café titled Kang Taehyun Boom was established on Daum in 2008 when he was just six years old, though it has since been closed.[12]
Before becoming a trainee, Taehyun initially turned down Big Hit Music’s offer multiple times, as he was focused on academics and had plans for a stable career path. He was described as mature and realistic for his age, with strong passion for his studies. However, after persistent scouting and honest conversations, he eventually decided to join the agency.[13]
Taehyun’s older sister played a key role in encouraging him to join Big Hit as a trainee, offering him support when his parents were not fully on board and he was unsure about the decision. She was the first person he called when he found out he made the debut lineup.[14]
He joined Big Hit Music as a trainee on March 2, 2016, and trained for several years before debuting with TXT.
Career
[edit]2002–present: TXT debut and activities
[edit]Taehyun debuted on March 4, 2019, as a member of TXT with the release of the EP The Dream Chapter: Star. Since then, the group has released several albums, achieving both domestic and international success.
In 2021, Taehyun co-hosted the EBS radio show Listen with bandmate Hueningkai from January 10 to May 2.[15][16] They read and reacted to stories sent in by listeners their age, offering comfort and support.
On February 23, 2022, Taehyun, along with bandmate Yeonjun, collaborated with American singer-songwriter Salem Ilese and DJ Alan Walker to release the single "PS5".[17]
From December 29, 2023, to March 29, 2024, Taehyun starred as himself in the 12-episode web variety series Academy Reincarnation, where he explored various skills and professions.[18] The episodes were released on the YouTube channel funniest_pawnshop, which was launched for the series.
On April 17, 2024, Taehyun became a Guinness World Record holder after participating in the 8th World Record Road for Kendama. He was the first participant in the successful attempt to set the record for the longest consecutive Kendama ball catches. His involvement was officially recognized by Guinness World Records.[19]
On June 5, 2024, Japanese artist Yamashita Tomohisa released the song "Perfect Storm (feat. Taehyun of Tomorrow X Together)" as part of the official soundtrack for the television drama Blue Moment.[20]

Philanthropy
[edit]Taehyun has shown a consistent commitment to supporting youth and cultural development through charitable donations. On February 5, 2024, in celebration of his 23rd birthday, he donated 25 million won to the Community Chest of Korea's "Love Fruit" campaign. The donation aimed to assist young people from culturally underprivileged backgrounds by funding educational and mentoring programs. These programs help youth expand their understanding and skills in arts and culture, including video production, literature, and visual arts. Taehyun expressed his gratitude, stating that he wanted to give back to his fans and hoped his contribution would provide strength to those in need.[21]
Continuing his philanthropic efforts, on February 5, 2025, Taehyun donated another 25 million won to the Community Chest of Korea. This donation was also dedicated to art and culture education and mentoring projects for young people in culturally disadvantaged areas, helping them develop their creative skills.[22]
