In response to the judgement that this article does not cite sufficiently authoritative sources, I would respectfully suggest that the New Grove Dictionary, and the references to original publications, are sufficient. I have cited primary sources (the 17th-century publications themselves), the most authoritative catalogue of early music in existence (RISM), and other secondary sources.
