Confusing name[edit]

I feel the name of this help page is confusing. There were a group of templates known as Citation Style 2; the remaining templates can be found in Category:Citation Style 2 templates. I think it is confusing to reuse that name for this page, or to say that {{Citation}} is synonymous with Citation Style 2. Jc3s5h (talk) 12:37, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

To add to the confusion, this thread uses the same names with different meanings. Jc3s5h (talk) 12:43, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Citation formatting RfC[edit]

 – Pointer to relevant discussion elsewhere.

Please see Talk:Aspromonte goat#RFC on citation formatting for an RfC about the scope of WP:CITEVAR and whether it can be used to prevent changes to underlying technical coding of reference citations, including correct XML, and changing problematic ref IDs.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  19:48, 21 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Drawing citation metadata from Wikidata[edit]

In preparation for the WikiCite event, currently taking place in Vienna, I have built a demonstrator template, {{Cite Q}}. Much work remains to be done, to deal with more complex use cases, and to resolve the issues listed there. Hopefully that will be addressed during the WikiCite hackathon, on Thursday (CET time, GMT +2). Your comments and remote participation will be welcome. Please use the template's talk page. Relationship to CS1?[edit]

A sentence needs to be added on how this differs from CS1 and any relevant comparison. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 21:54, 27 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 22:12, 27 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No longer used?[edit]

Should we delete this help page? Template:Citation invokes CS1 and there are no more templates left in Category:Citation Style 2 templates, so now this help page is pretty confusing. Mvolz (talk) 07:27, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps delete the category. Yes, there is only one template that by default renders in cs2 style though all cs1 templates can be instructed to render as cs2 (|mode=cs2). It is pretty obvious that Help:CS2 is incomplete in that it doesn't actually say what cs2 style is.

One of the key features of the Citation template is that it figures out what kind of work is being cited by what parameters are present or absent (although there is a mode parameter to override the template's guess on this aspect). That and a number of differences in the defaults make it a distinct style.
I find it ironic that, outside of Wikipedia, periods as separators are usually used in parenthetical referencing while commas are usually used in footnote referencing, but Citation has ref=harv tuned on by default and CS1 doesn't. Jc3s5h (talk) 07:40, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You are mistaken; |mode= changes styling: for |mode=cs1, element separators change from commas to periods, terminal punctuation is included, and |ref= is not automatically set to harv. |mode= plays no role in the template's guesswork.

Mvolz you are mistaken; by default, {{citation}} invokes CS2, and it is heavily used. The category does seem pretty useless, though. —David Eppstein (talk) 14:32, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In the {{citation}} template wikisource, it {{#invoke:}}s Module:Citation/CS1; there is no Module:Citation/CS2.
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:39, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, but this help page is or should be about the style, not about the (nonexistent) module. —David Eppstein (talk) 18:10, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, thanks everyone for the clarification. I was indeed confused because I assumed CS1 === CS1 module. Help page definitely needs some work. Mvolz (talk) 17:31, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
