Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Weekly highlight
* The Trust and Safety Product team is finalizing work needed to roll out temporary accounts on large Wikipedias later this month. The team has worked with stewards and other users with extended rights to predict and address many use cases that may arise on larger wikis, so that community members can continue to effectively moderate and patrol temporary accounts. This will be the second of three phases of deployment – the last one will take place in September at the earliest. For more information about the recent developments on the project, see this update. If you have any comments or questions, write on the talk page, and join a CEE Catch Up this Tuesday.

Updates for editors
* The watchlist expiry feature allows editors to watch pages for a limited period of time. After that period, the page is automatically removed from your watchlist. Starting this week, you can set a preference for the default period of time to watch pages. The preferences also allow you to set different default watch periods for editing existing pages, pages you create, and when using rollback.
* The appearance of talk pages will change at almost all Wikipedias (some have already received this design change, a few will get these changes later). You can read details about the changes on Diff. It is possible to opt out of these changes in user preferences ("").
* Users with specific extended rights (including administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, and stewards) can now have IP addresses of all temporary accounts revealed automatically during time-limited periods where they need to combat high-speed account-hopping vandalism. This feature was requested by stewards.
* This week, the Moderator Tools and Machine Learning teams will continue the rollout of a new filter to Recent Changes, releasing it to several more Wikipedias. This filter utilizes the Revert Risk model, which was created by the Research team, to highlight edits that are likely to be reverted and help Recent Changes patrollers identify potentially problematic contributions. The feature will be rolled out to the following Wikipedias: . The rollout will continue in the coming weeks to include the rest of the Wikipedias in this project.

Updates for technical contributors
* AbuseFilter editors active on Meta-Wiki and large Wikipedias are kindly asked to update AbuseFilter to make it compatible with temporary accounts. A link to the instructions and the private lists of filters needing verification are available on Phabricator.
* Lua modules now have access to the name of a page's associated thumbnail image, and on some wikis to the WikiProject assessment information. Discussion you may want to be aware of

There is a discussion at WP:VPR - the outcome of which would have a bearing on your AWB script for adding wikilinks. Traumnovelle (talk) 23:38, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. ―Panamitsu (talk) 23:55, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Note to self: it is at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#RfC: work field and reflinks. 📶Panamitsu (talk) 05:38, 28 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think your signature might fail WP:SIGAPP: "Your signature must not blink, scroll, or otherwise cause inconvenience to or annoy other editors."-Gadfium (talk) 05:44, 28 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Kauri dieback in NZ

hi, was just reading up on your page for the Waitakere Ranges. Kauri dieback is caused by a fungus (Phytophthora agathidicida), not a bacteria as reported. Regards, Jim 49.224.203.166 (talk) 04:58, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, they're oomycetes (water moulds), which are distinct from fungi. I've changed Waitākere Ranges.-Gadfium (talk) 05:09, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't written anything in that article before but I thank you for the feedback and I thank Gadfium for the fix. ―Panamitsu (talk) 05:22, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. You're invited to participate in The World Destubathon. We're aiming to destub a lot of articles and also improve longer stale articles. It will be held from Monday June 16 - Sunday July 13. DYK for Medway Street footbridge

On 3 June 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Medway Street footbridge, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that after the Medway Street footbridge had become twisted (pictured) in the 2010 Canterbury earthquake, part of it was turned into a memorial? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Medway Street footbridge. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Medway Street footbridge), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Haha a cheeseburger! That's funny, I've never seen that before. ―Panamitsu (talk) 02:46, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I hope it filled your brain with the strength to keep going! - OpalYosutebitotalk』 『articles I want to eat18:28, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Inspired by your comment, I'm thinking about creating a New Zealand version of this template -- "A pavlova for you!" ―Panamitsu (talk) 22:08, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the club

The Featured Article Medal
By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this special, very exclusive award created just for we few, we happy few, this band of brothers, who have shed sweat, tears and probably blood, in order to be able to proudly claim "I too have taken an article to Featured status". Gog the Mild (talk) 18:03, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ^_^ it was a roller coaster. ―Panamitsu (talk) 22:09, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, FAC can be like that. Especially when it's your first. I'm pleased that you made it. Now that you know where the bar is I hope there will be more before too long. Gog the Mild (talk) 22:21, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Feet (penguin) scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for 3 July 2025. Please check that the article needs no amendments. Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/July 2025, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/July 2025. Please keep an eye on that page, as notifications of copy edits to or queries about the draft blurb may be left there by user:JennyOz, who assists the coordinators by reviewing the blurbs, or by others. I also suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from two days before it appears on the Main Page. Thanks, and congratulations on your work! SchroCat (talk) 18:30, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations, Panamitsu! The article you nominated, Happy Feet (penguin), has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, David Fuchs (talk) via FACBot (talk) 00:05, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikischedule block message

How we can integrate your Wikischedule block message into MediaWiki as one of "can't edit" notices? CreatorTheWikipedian2009 (talk) 14:01, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What are these "can't edit" notices? I've never heard of them before. Sounds like it might be a good idea. Do you mean the ones that prevent people from editing after being blocked? ―Panamitsu (talk) 22:28, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Just read Help:MediaWiki namespace. They call them "system messages". CreatorTheWikipedian2009 (talk) 08:44, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. Not sure how to do that. Do you know? ―Panamitsu (talk) 09:31, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No. This might need administrators/interface administrators or interface editors for some intervention. CreatorTheWikipedian2009 (talk) 10:12, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In that case I think the current Wikischedule block message does the trick. Working on the script is a low priority for me right now because I no longer have a problem with spending too much time on Wikipedia. ―Panamitsu (talk) 10:38, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. CreatorTheWikipedian2009 (talk) 11:23, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the idea anyhow. ―Panamitsu (talk) 11:29, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
