He is NOT Turkish

https://ethnicelebs.com/sam-morril 77.119.168.199 (talk) 21:03, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

His mother, Marilyn Greenberg, is a painter, of abstract art. His biological father is Robert Elgort. Sam was raised by his mother and stepfather, attorney Mark Morril, and took his surname. His uncle is fashion photographer Arthur Elgort. Sam is a first cousin of photographer Sophie Elgort and actor and DJ Ansel Elgort, who are Arthur’s children. Sam was raised in New York.
Sam has stated that both of his birth parents are Jewish; as is his stepfather.
Sam’s paternal grandfather was Henech “Harry” Elgort (the son of Samuel Shimel Elgort and Etel/Ethel/Etta Ushomesky Schumerska). Henech was a Jewish emigrant from Roternissel, Russia. Samuel was born in St. Petersburg, the son of Mottel Elgort and Bloom. Etel was the daughter of Tellig Ushomesky Schumerska and Thena Kiratt.
Sam’s paternal grandmother was Sophie/Sophia Didimamoff (the daughter of Rafael Didimamoff and Katharine/Katherine/Katarzyna/Catherine/Katherina Kurtz). Sophie was born in New York, to a father from Akhaltsikhe, Russian Empire, now Georgia; and a mother from Lemberg, Austria, now in Lviv, Ukraine. Sam’s grandmother’s exact heritage is not clear. She had a Catholic funeral (she re-married to a Catholic). It is not clear if she was of Jewish heritage, but it is possible, given her emigrant roots in Lviv and the surname Kurtz. Sam’s uncle Arthur, at least, had a Bar Mitzvah ceremony and attended a Jewish summer camp, and Sam has referred to his father as Jewish.
Sam’s maternal grandfather was named George Greenberg. George was chairman and chief executive of Loehmann’s, the women’s clothing store chain in the Bronx.
Sam’s maternal grandmother was Frances Lily Huberman (the daughter of Morris Huberman and Celia Stern). Frances was born in Massachusetts, to Polish Jewish parents. Morris was born in Chełm, the son of Sol Huberman and Frieda Cooperman. Hebrew28 (talk) 21:09, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hebrew28's appears to be a copy/paste from the ethicelebs.com link the IP posted, so it may get removed as copyright violation. Consensus says not use that website, see Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources (you will need to search for it on there).
I guess this about @Rift's revert to "He is of Ashkenazi Jewish and Turkish descent" claim that was in the article, it is sourced from Morril's comedy podcast. At the timestamp provided he says he has a little Turkish in him, 12% according to a DNA geneolgy test, with a large chunk of Ashkenazi Jewish. You could direct quote him about that in the article, but to be definitive about descent using a comedian's own podcast. I will update the article to make it clearer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3yLZ0Kef4M He said on a Joe Rogan podcast wants to a test and that he said as a joke he could be Turkish because of his eyebrows , but all of his ancestors where born in either Poland, Ukraine , Russia or were Ashkenazi who settled in Georgia escaping pogroms in Russia . On the Rogan podcast he says he didnt to one . Hebrew28 (talk) 07:29, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Hebrew28: playing the poor source game is not fun. Youtube is a poor souce, I agree. You can take all the quotes about Morril's ancestory from the We might be drunk podcast, Rogan's podcast, Commander Keane's podcast, whatever. Or you can use a real source. You can't pick and choose the Youtube video you that you like. So if there aren't any reliable sources we will just not cover it at all - I am perfectly happy with that. Incidentally, you left Turkish/Jewish descent categories behind when you last edited. Commander Keane (talk) 10:41, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Hebrew28: I don't have time to read your comment but I suspect you are applying original research. See Wikipedia:No original research. Commander Keane (talk) 12:14, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Hebrew28: you have had your time constantly removing a sourced statement (if Youtube is reliable or not, you are welcome to discuss here) from the article, but if you disrupt the article again you may be blocked. Not by me, but someone. I will also note this on your talk page. Commander Keane (talk) 22:44, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Commander Keane Thanks for your level-headed input. As for YouTube, there is no blanket yes/no on whether YouTube sources are reliable, but the citation in question is valid per the stipulations of WP:ABOUTSELF. Rift (talk) 23:19, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Rift: ahh yes that link does cover it. It is unfortunate that Wikipedia can't obviously distinguish between a social media self source and something else, but explicitly attributing the video - and thanks for getting the exact words in quotes and fixing my awkward phraseology - looks fine to me. There is a risk, particularly with a comedian, that it is a joke but it is now clearly presented to the reader so they can decide. Wikipedia categories also suffer from a lack of source clarity and including them for Morril's descent is another reader-beware situation. Commander Keane (talk) 00:21, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
