Official language

[edit]

USSR didn't have an official language until 1990. 5.151.189.241 (talk) 01:03, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Culture section wording change

[edit]

There have been three versions of the first sentence of the Culture section of the page. Which one is the most clear?

1. The culture of the Soviet Union passed through several stages during the USSR's existence.

I think this one is poor as it reuses the Soviet Union / USSR in the same sentence.

2. The culture of the Soviet Union evolved through several stages during its existence.

This was my first change, however "during its existence" implies that there was no successive culture in the post-Soviet states.

3. The culture of the Soviet Union evolved through several stages during the country's existence.

I think this one is the clearest as it refers to the Soviet Union's existence in relation to the evolution of Soviet culture, not Soviet culture itself. However, this change was reverted by Remsense who actually reverted a previous reversion in favour of the second version. As the person who originally created the second version, I think the third version is further improved. Just because it is not adding new information with new references does not mean it has to be reversed, and fixing expression on Wikipedia is completely justified as an act.

4. Culture in the Soviet Union evolved through several stages during its existence.

Alternatively, this could actually be an even further improved version as this more explicitly specifies the USSR's existence over the culture's existence, which ultimately never dissipated and exists within post-Soviet country's modern day culture, without reusing the word "Soviet Union" or an equivalent like "USSR" or "country's". Apologies, the present wording simply doesn't imply what you've stated it does (i.e. there was no successive culture in the post-Soviet states) as far as I can discern. It's fine how it is. Remsense ‥  03:34, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
