The WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves | |
On behalf of the Military History Project, I am proud to present the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves for Hog Farm is the name in the English Wikipedia's coverage of the American Civil War, with dozens on dozens of articles of quality, and has devoted years of his time and energy to the coordination and maintenance of MILHIST. - Congrats, HF! 👍🏻 Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 01:50, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Congratulations! Hawkeye7 (discuss) 02:19, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- This is quite the honor - it's humbling to think that I'd be considered for this. Hog Farm Talk 02:24, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Hog Farm. Just reaching out as you and I and User:Buidhe seem to be the only editors who have been granted theWikiChevrons with Oak Leaves so far this decade. It's a much more exclusive club these days, and I'm honored to share it with you. I've been interested in the US Civil War since I bought a deleted copy of "Terrible Swift Sword" around 1984. Thanks for your contributions. Now I have to go back to the 162nd Rifle Division.

A change of pace
[edit]Hi, hope you're well. I'm debating an attempt to spruce up USS Bourbon, as a relatively simple article to start with. While I realise this isn't exactly your field, I wondered whether you know of any definitive sources for the US/Continental Navy of this period? Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:25, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Pickersgill-Cunliffe: - Unfortunately, the Continental era isn't one I'm very familiar. My personal interest lie in the times of the Mississippi River steamboats. Hog Farm Talk 03:19, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, thought that would be the case but had to try! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 08:22, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
DYK for Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter
[edit]On 5 May 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter was staged by moving a corpse? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Interface administrator changes
- Following an RfC, administrator elections were permanently authorized on a five-month schedule. The next election will be scheduled soon; see Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections for more information. This is an alternate process to the RfA process and does not replace the latter.
- An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in {{sticky decoration wrapper}}. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
- An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2025 to reduce the backlog of articles in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

Hi HF. I trust that things are well with you. You could do with stirring up some interest in the FAC for Battle of Arkansas Post (1863), or one of the coordinators is liable to archive it. Gog the Mild (talk) 11:41, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the warning. After I get some GAN matters finished up, I will try to get some FAC reviews in to drum up some interest. Hog Farm Talk 16:52, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- You have reviews in the bank. Maybe straight out ask Schro, Z1720 and Generalissima? You have reviewed all of them recently. Gog the Mild (talk) 17:29, 30 May 2025 (UTC)

Thank you today for 8th Missouri Infantry Regiment (Confederate), introduced (in 2023): "I worked on this one all the way back in 2020, but was just recently able to find sources to resolve a snag that came up in the ACR." - I have Easter Oratorio on the main page, sorry for a delay, - of course I told the story, which is admittedly complex, on Easter Sunday for the music's 300th anniversary. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:13, 7 June 2025 (UTC)

The Sniper
[edit]I did some checking, and the person that was making a lot of questionable changes to Civil War articles involving West Virginia has not made any edits since January 2024 (unless he/she got a new name). I called him a "Sniper" because he did not seem to write many articles, only lots of changes to other people's articles. The biggest problems were in 2019. TwoScars (talk) 18:32, 8 June 2025 (UTC)

Miller's Cornfield
[edit]If you have time in the next few days, can you look at the edits to this article to see if you think it now meets B class. I am leaning toward B class but wonder whether some of the citations, in particular, are sufficient. It seems to me that the user is still citing a summary in a few of them and is likely guessing about the chapters of the book in which the info is set out as he doesn't have page numbers. Perhaps that is sufficient for this one considering the info appears to be correct? I may even wait to the weekend unless someone else jumps in.
This has been a reminder to me to be more attentive, especially to the citations, when assessing requests for B class. Usually, requests come from experienced users who only miss something by inadvertence and cite good sources in a proper way but that should not be assumed for every request. This is unlike the bot assessments since some overrating and not in scope articles can be found every month. An additional problem here, which the user shrugs off just mistakes, is more serious. That is citing sources that do not exist and page numbers that aren't in the books with a similar or identical title, but are by other authors. That's mainly why I remain somewhat suspicious about this editor and his work.
I have reviewed other articles written or edited by this user and have left some tags. Most were worked on this month and still have stub or start assessments so I changed only one or two assessments. I saw some deficiencies if these articles as well. Donner60 (talk) 01:26, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- It's possible but unlikely that they have ebook access to a copy with chapter but no page numbers (which is how those sometimes are) but I think this is rather unlikely because I have no clue how you would accidentally cite a book that doesn't exist and a book with an obvious wrong author? I own print copies of the Welker, Sears, Hartwig, and McPherson books cited in the article so I can do some checks later but the text seems correct. I might let citing chapter slide at b-class but certainly not at a higher level and I'd really like to know how they ended up citing the non-existent (or at least mis-subtitled) Cozzens book. Hog Farm Talk 02:44, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- Agreed. Before I saw your reply, I began to wonder whether chapter numbers were insufficient, especially since they are probably just a guess from the online summary of the book and the listing of the chapter numbers in it. Yet, the text seems correct. My surmise is that it probably just about all came from Sears or the existing article on the battle. Donner60 (talk) 23:06, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
