[edit] Hello, I'm Materialscientist. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Archibald Vincent Arnold, but you didn't provide a source. I’ve removed it for now, but if you’d like to include a citation to a reliable source and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Materialscientist (talk) 02:30, 8 June 2025 (UTC)

If you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization, you may request unblock and a username change. In your reasons, you must follow all these steps:
- Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the paid-contribution disclosure requirement; and
- Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked; and
- Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked; and
- Provide a new username.
To do this, insert the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked.
Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken and in use by another account. You can search to see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is still available.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text{{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 17:58, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

Notes:
- In some cases, you may not in fact be blocked, or your block has already expired. Please check the list of active blocks. If no block is listed, then you have been autoblocked by the automated anti-vandalism systems. Please remove this request and follow these instructions instead for quick attention by an administrator.
- Please read our guide to appealing blocks to make sure that your unblock request will help your case. You may change your request at any time.
If you ask the blocking administrator to comment on this request, replace this template with the following, replacing "blocking administrator" with the name of the blocking admin:
{{Unblock on hold |1=blocking administrator |2=I guess I do not understand why you think I am advertising. 1) For my username - I am a golfer that lives in Pinehurst. 2) I am not advertising this group at all - there is nothing to advertise. I am trying to describe the history. 3) Your policies seem arbitrary to me - I see no difference of this page to the PGA or USGA pages - you keep saying advertising - but I am not in any way. I rewrote the page and followed the rules on wikipedia 4) I am a history buff that find the history portion fascinating. 5) You can delete my account and the page I was doing this for fun as I have, along with my employees, contributed for years to Wikipedia and thought this was an interesting topic that fit in with all the other golfing items you had since it intertwined with so many other articles you had. 6) Please delete the page, my account and remove my email from your records [[User:Pinehurstgolf|Pinehurstgolf]] ([[User talk:Pinehurstgolf#top|talk]]) 12:32, 28 June 2025 (UTC) |3 = ~~~~}}
If you decline the unblock request, replace this template with the following code, substituting {{subst:Decline reason here}}
with a specific rationale. Leaving the decline reason unchanged will result in display of a default reason, explaining why the request was declined.
{{unblock reviewed |1=I guess I do not understand why you think I am advertising. 1) For my username - I am a golfer that lives in Pinehurst. 2) I am not advertising this group at all - there is nothing to advertise. If you accept the unblock request, replace this template with the following, substituting Accept reason here
with your rationale:
{{unblock reviewed |1=I guess I do not understand why you think I am advertising. 1) For my username - I am a golfer that lives in Pinehurst. 2) I am not advertising this group at all - there is nothing to advertise. - If you no longer wish to edit here, that is of course your prerogative, and I am happy to decline your unblock request. I can also delete your article draft, if you so wish. What I cannot do, however, is delete your user account, as this isn't technically possible; you can simply stop using this account, and abandon it.
- However, if I may, I would like to explain what has caused this issue.
- Firstly, your username sounds like that of a golf club, and when you're writing an article about a subject associated with a club by that name, the obvious assumption is that you are representing the club. This automatically makes your editing appear more promotional than it otherwise would: 'promotion' on Wikipedia is a broader concept than advertising, and can mean 'telling the world about [myself, my golf club, my book, etc.]'. It also makes it look as if you have a conflict of interest (COI) in this subject. To resolve this, if you have no association with the club, then I would suggest that you change your name to something less suggestive of that.
- Secondly, your draft is, or at least was in an earlier version, written from the point of view of the club, with expressions like
"we host ten major tournaments"
and"Our members actively engage"
, etc. Not only is this first-person voice unsuitable for an encyclopaedia, it further gives (gave) the impression that this was the club telling the world about itself. Wikipedia articles should be composed mainly by summarising what independent and reliable secondary sources have said about a subject, and while this draft does cite some local secondary sources, much of it is primary material. - For what it's worth, I actually have a feeling that this subject may well be notable, and a Wikipedia article could be successfully written on it, albeit that this would require a major rewrite.
- I don't know if it's any consolation – probably not! – but creating a new article from scratch is just about the most difficult thing on Wikipedia, and can be a frustrating experience for the uninitiated. As indeed you have discovered the hard way, and for that I am sorry.
- Anyway, I will obviously leave the decision whether to continue further with this, or pull the proverbial plug as you have already requested, entirely for you; I just wanted to shed some light on why we are where we are.
- Best Regards, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 13:34, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
I agree the earlier version was written poorly (I am not a writer). I rewrote it based on the first rejection and after reading the references. The new writeup, I thought would satisfy the issue. The frustrating part - is that the rejections do not come with any information as to why it was rejected- the references seem to be satisfied. I am a member of the club. I am not trying to advertise anything here - just tell the history. I find the history fascination and I believe many others would also. No one asked for this to be added to wikipedia, so I have no problem abandoning it. If it is notable, I am happy to rewrite it, but I would need some guidance on what is wrong. As I read it, it satisfies the requirements (I am fine if I am wrong here - just need guidance). — Preceding unsigned comment added by PinehurstGolf (talk • contribs)
- I fixed your request so that your statement replaced the words "your reason here" as intended. You will need to tell us a new username to rename this account to, one that represents you as an individual. Your real name is not required. 331dot (talk) 16:14, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- I would add that we don't have access to your email address in your account, you are free to remove it yourself. 331dot (talk) 16:15, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- The issue with your draft is that it is just you telling about your fraternal organization and its activities. A Wikipedia article summarizes what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about(in this case) the organization, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable organization. If it's known for its charitable work or scholarships, we need independent sources that say that, not just a summary of its activities. 331dot (talk) 16:18, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- I thought I was bringing up the history and I included sources for the New York Times, Pinehurst Outlook, and other places. There a thousands of newspaper articles from many different newspapers, all over the US, covering every tournament, social events, etc. In looking at the requirements (I am quoting below) - The Tin Whistles were covered in newspapers across the US and UK from the origin until the 50's after that the coverage was more local (state). Does the fact that it is no longer covered as much nationally kick it out of contention as being notable? I am interested in describing the history and how the group advanced the game of Amateur golf in the early 1900s.
- For the scholarship. I can find articles (county/state wide), but I cannot find links to the articles as some newspapers require payments and accounts. I could cite all the articles, but most could not be accessed.
- Thanks for taking the time.

- Non-commercial organizations
- Organizations are usually notable if they meet both of the following standards:
- The scope of their activities is national or international in scale.
- The organization has received significant coverage in multiple reliable sources that are independent of the organization.

- I told you I wasn't a writer. Thanks for the fix. I guess a username would be retiredgeek (if that is available). Pinehurstgolf (talk) 16:33, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- I've renamed you. 331dot (talk) 18:08, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
