Wikipedia:The World Destubathon
The World Destubathon
sponsored by OKA and WMUK
for 16 June – 13 July, 2025...

Welcome to the World Destubathon! It is a general stub elimination and article improvement contest, mainly sponsored by the Open Knowledge Association (OKA) along with Wikimedia UK, in the vein of the highly successful European Destubathon contest, with the intention to cover all the topics and countries of the world. The idea is simple: Try to have a lot of fun in blasting away as many of our 3 million + stubs as possible! There is $3338 (£2465) available in total in prizes for this, with $1000 of main prizes going into most destubs and article improvements overall. The idea is that editors use their prizes to buy books to help them further contribute to Wikipedia.
All that is required for this is basic stub article expansions and improvements and to cleanup articles which are longer than a stub by rewriting/debloating/sourcing them. To "destub" an article all you have to do is ensure it is minimum 1.5 kB (1500 characters) of readable prose (excluding infoboxes, references, markup, lists and categories) in total and reasonably well-written, though if there is an abundance of information try to surpass the requirement comfortably. The existing text and text you add is expected to all be verifiable and adequately sourced to reliable sources with the expected citations fully drawn up, while avoiding copyright and paraphrasing. No unverified claims. Whoever "destubs" and improves the most articles overall and for a given topic wins a prize, and whoever has the most "destubs" and improved articles overall will be crowned the overall winner.
In cleaning up and improving longer articles, you are encouraged to be bold, nuke big chunks of unsourced or bloated text and replace with your own if needs be, as long as the final result is quality and no unverified claims. So this can also be seen as a joint Debloatathon/Cleanathon/Sourceathon, though the contest is intended to be more focused on eliminating stubs.
A considerable percentage of the prize money is going into rewarding editors for working on real world places—any feature you can see on Google Earth, from towns, rivers and lakes to listed buildings and monuments, and anything from the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine and business. A strong focus is intended on destubbing and improving articles on cities, towns, villages and districts globally. You have the potential to earn the most by focusing on these subjects and being adventurous with how many countries you work on, though all contributions from any subject or country are welcome and there are smaller prizes for things like sports and entertainment, women's biographies and nature. The contest can still be won by intensive work on any country or topic which interests you.
Entries submitted here will be added to the overall Wikipedia:The 50,000 Destubbing Challenge at the end of the contest and relevant articles may also be added to the regional challenges linked in the template at the bottom of the page like Wikipedia:The 20,000 Challenge. Even if you don't want prizes, you're welcome to participate in this as an editathon and find something to enjoy this summer! The contest will commence on Monday, 16th June 2025 and end on Sunday, 13th July.

Rules
[edit]Please make sure you read the rules very carefully if participating!
Measuring tool
[edit]The article-readable prose, excluding sources and lists, will have to be minimum 1500 bytes (1.5 KB) to comply with the contest.
To measure the article size, please use the Wikipedia:Prosesize gadget. Like most Wikipedia tools, you must be logged in to install or use the gadget. To install it, select it at Preferences → Gadgets → Browsing → Prosesize: add a toolbox link to show the size of and number of words in a page (direct link), and then save. To remove the gadget, disable the gadget in your preferences. If using Vector skins this will appear in the toolbox top right on an article page. If using the old Monobook skin it will appear at the bottom of the box on the left. Click on the page size before starting and when you're finished to gauge how much readable prose you've added and if it complies with the rules.
