What would you like to do?
Ask a question Do something
(e.g. Did Leonardo da Vinci build a working flying machine?)
(e.g. How can I fix this problem with this article?)
(e.g. I was cheated by a builder. Please Help.)

I am fairly new here on wikipedia, and I would like to know very much why the wikipedia world refuses to accept my article Adam and andrew.

It is clearly a notable group of musicians, not vanity as there is no vocabulary that would suggest so, I am not in the band myself and I have taken a neutral point of view and worked with the information I could confirm.

The many links seem to be irrelavent to people who judge the article, and go for the obvious ones in their choices in the deletion review 'Their official website has no alexa rank', despite the fact that the official website has no mention in the article and it is clearly explained that they mainly operate through MySpace and are Internet phenomenons, so do not have a record label, much in the same way that the Numa numa kid does not have a record label or the copyrights to the O-zone song.

I do not see why my article seems to be such a problem for the users of wikipedia! It is a point of reference on wikipedia for the band Adam and andrew and without it there would be none, and it would certainly be less notable without my entry.

I also want to know why so many people seem to think it is causing a problem for everybody else being there. If you don't know who they are, it seems obvious to read the article and find out or follow the links at the bottom.

Please explain to me how all this is working as a bureaucracy.

I've been accused of being a sockpuppet by User:Peter_S. and although I have tried to speak to him about it on his talk page he refuses to believe me, claiming we would find out soon enough if I was or not. I'm abit confused about he means, and to be honest I really don't need this trouble. If anyone could offer any advice on how to proceed I would be very grateful. So I've just spent the last half hour removing vandalism from various Radio 1 members' pages (deleting comments such as "she has been romantically linked to Papa smurf" etc.), then I get this lovely message:

Regarding the page Edith Bowman, please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Grandwazir 17:25, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

And I definately haven't been vandalising and now I'm so annoyed. All I was doing was trying to help. Wikipedia confuses me sometimes *sigh*. Bodil 17:47, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay sorry about that rant. I've calmed down now, I was just slightly irritated at being accused of something I hadn't done. No offence meant at all to Grandwazir, Wikipedians or anyone else :). Bodil 21:21, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

reply - -ssc was too long ago for me. however what helped me later was sitting to study a fixed amount of material without any time commitment. i can get up only once i finish. and remove all distractions. lock yourself up in a room. sit, DON'T lie down. no touching the mobile. no clock to remind you of appointments. let others take your calls and pass on the messages to you later. let me know if it helps.

as for yiddish, i didnt notice that. but i did notice they dont have finnish. ;)

I am a pychologist trying to fix a problem related to the five factor model of personality, more commonly known as the Big Five. If I type "five factor model" I get redirected to the Big Five page which is a great article. On that page, there is a link to the page you get when you type "Five Factor Model" which is a stub. This stub contains nothing of interest that is not already on the "Big Five personality traits" page... Isn't it an error that capitalization changes which page you get? Even if not, I think clearly the stub should be removed and users redirected to the "Big Five personality traits" page since it doesn't include anything unique and the couple of sentences that are there are problematic... the first sentnce actually isn't correct. I've got a question about NPOV: Under what circumstances is it appropriate for an article to make qualitative judgements about the subject matter? For example, pages for the films Gigli and Heaven's Gate (film) not only make qualitative judgements, but those judgements comprise a large part of the articles. Would it be less appropriate if the subject matter had less qualitative consensus amongst reviewers? What's the guideline here? ERobson 23:25, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This comes up all the time at Films that have been considered the greatest ever. The important thing is to find a published reputable source for the point of view and cite it. Many articles deal with the POV of others. It is important to do so in an NPOV way. It is POV to say "Citizen Kane is the greatest film of all time". It is NPOV to say it was "listed as the greatest film ever by the American Film Institute in 1998. "-- Samuel Wantman 22:44, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How do I create an article? the preceding unsigned comment is by 69.251.15.145 (talk • contribs) 20:02, January 3, 2006 (UTC)

  1. First, you need to register at Wiki with an account, because people identified only by an IP address are no longer allowed to create an article. I listed some tutorials related to getting started here
  2. Next, find a place where the article should logically be linked, and key in the link using the appropriate Wiki code, such as [[User:Demolol/New article]] which produces a red link like this User:Demolol/New article, then click on that link and start editing.

Actually, questions like this belong on the Wikipedia:Help desk but are going to be coming here in incereasing numbers until consensus is achieved on adjustments to Wikipedia:Where to ask a question. User:AlMac|(talk) 08:32, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I feel I have a passable grasp of editing style and prose in wikipedia, but one aspect that always gives me trouble is that of sourcing and citing. Luckily, I have not had any of my watched articles tagged with {{unreferenced}} yet, but I feel that it's a matter of time. I write most of my articles from memory. For example, my most watched article is Age of Empires III, a computer game. Not only are there few reliable sources online, this is a computer game, and most of my knowledge comes from playing the game itself! Does this mean I have to find proof of my knowledge that I gained through hours of gameplay? Or can I simply not source my ideas? Kareeser 17:30, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not as a mentor but speaking from personal experience and observations, it would seem that videogame articles are fine as long as you one could confirm it is true to the game by playing it. The reason being is that when writing a videogame article there are only 3 really likely references: The Developers, and any material they may release, game review sites and magazines, and the game itself (and all accompanying material).--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 17:37, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have been heavily involved in the Michael Jackson article. I am a newbie, and apparently don't know the rules as there have been complaints against me. The rules I have had trouble with are 3RR and pages for deletion. Not knowing about the rule, I made 4 reverts to the Michael Jackson article in 24 hrs. A user then threatened to report me immediately. There was also a redirect page I added which another user put up for deletion. I disagreed with the nomination for deletion, and not knowing that a concensus needed to be reached, or how a concensus is reached, I deleted the notice. Although, on seconds thoughts (and after reading about NPOV) I agree the redirect should be deleted (the redirect I am talking of is King of music. I am worried that I have been unnecessarily reported by another member regarding my removal of the deletion notice. I was not warned, and the user did not follow the necessary steps before reporting me as a vandal. I think I need help regarding POV because a few users have accused me of POV. Again, the article I have mostly been involved in is Michael Jackson. Check my contributions to that article and see if I am letting my POV influence my editing of that article.

I feel like it would be a good idea to request mentorship of some sort. I have been editing wikipedia for a while, and I am pretty comfortable with the basic and many of the more intricate concepts behind it, but I seem to have a couple specific problems. I am apparently very long winded, leaving comments much larger than others would care to read, and as a result not really contributing much, because no one wants to take the time to decipher them (understandably so). I also seem to have a possibly related problem with conflict resolution and the like. I catch myself being somewhat abrasive and perhaps somewhat quick to react. I feel I could be a lot more useful if somone were able to pehaps give me a little mentoring regarding my issues. --Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 06:47, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea to me. I do at some point want to apply for Adminship, to better serve wikipedia especially regarding mediation and counter vandalism (probably my main reasons for joining). However, I feel I am far from any point close to that, and will not make much progress without good mentorship. Plus they both seem like they have a generally good idea of whats going on, and are rather level headed so I could go for that no problem.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 07:57, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'd like to know something. Is there any easier way to revert an article rather than just cutting and pasting the whole thing? Is there some button that does it automaticly?

At the top of the page their is a history button, similar to the edit and talk page button. Click on this to see all past versions of the article. Then click the date and time of the version of the article you want to revert to. You will see the article as it was at that time. Then click the edit button, and save without making any changes. you will get a notice warning you about editing an out of date version. Then you have reverted! Make sure not to revert more than three times in one day. This is way easier than I'm makeing it sound. wikifun --Banana04131 18:09, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

hopefully this is the place for this

listing people who are from a certain country/town - chronologically seems most sensible, as you'd be more likely to be interested in people who lived in a certain place at a certain time, than how many people whose names start with a lived there.

I assume we use english names such as "turin" instead of "torino"? but why? the town is torino. turin is a bastardization or mistranslation (other examples are moscow and munich). surely turin should point to torino, not vice versa? it's different for languages which use other characters of course.

Well, San Jose, California is spelled without the accent, however, San José, Costa Rica. The Turin page is located at Turin, and Turino doesn't exist, but I might redirect to Turin. There was a lame edit war of the spelling of Istabul, (currently at İstanbul) with wierd i.)--

Max ( | )

The main article is the name which is used the most in the English language and doesn't mean that it is the official name. So Torino redirects to Turin, but both are valid. It is just that Turin is most common used in English. The same with Moscow, Moskow, Moskva which all direct to the same page. That is the reason the article starts with Turin (Italian Torino) which indicates that Torino is the official name, but that Turin is the common name Dr Debug 16:11, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

After you upload the image you can follow the instructions here to insert it into an article. If you already have an image in mind that is on wikipedia you can skip the uploading part of course, and just add it directly. japanese and chinese names

are the japanese and chinese names in the articles in wikipedia following the traditional format (surname first) or Westernized (first name first)? Some seems to be in the traditional format and some westernized. Please reply.

From Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)

For an article about a historical figure (a person born before the first year of Meiji (1868)), always use the traditional Japanese order of family name + given name. For example:

Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川 家康, January 30, 1543June 1, 1616) was the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate

For an article about a modern figure (a person born from the first year of Meiji (1868) onward), always use the Western order of given name + family name. For example:

Junichiro Koizumi (小泉 純一郎 Koizumi Jun'ichirō, born January 8, 1942) is a Japanese politician

Hope that helps :D - cohesiontalk 08:23, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Crystal Palace

There seems to be an unholy mess on various entries that relate to the Crystal Palace. According to the article on Sydenham, the Crystal Palace was located to Sydenham after the Great Exhibition finished. According to the article on Crystal Palace, it was relocated to Sydenham, according to the Crystal Palace, London article it is in Upper Norwood (on Beaulah Hill - which is also known as Gyspsy Hill Anerley Hill and Westwood Hill) and according to the article on Penge, it is in Penge. Maps show that the Crystal Palace Park is entirely within the Penge Ward of the London Borough of Bromley.

This is further complicated by the fact that Penge, despite being in the London Borough of Bromley, has a London postcode. The name Crystal Palace applies to the (destroyed) building, a general area, a BBC transmitter, a ward of the London Borough of Bromley, a London Borough of Bromley park (which is not in the ward of that name), a bus terminus and two railway stations (not to mention the Crystal Palace Football Club). How can this all be sorted out to produce a coherent and accurate repost?

I notice that entries on Wikipedia don't all have logos, if a logo was to be added to Wikipedia I assume it would have to be uploaded so the image is actually on the Wiki server.

Also is permission needed to take the official logo from the official site for that entry.

I know it is for any other image (such as photos), but I am not sure for logos.

pjb007 13:30, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes a logo has to be uploaded before it can be used. Usually the {{logo}} licence is used. Since that licence claims fair use, you don't have to request permission, but you should note on the image description page why you think the logo is fair use.--Commander Keane 13:40, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Red Cell Video

I am trying to get ahold of a copy of the Red Cell video. I have a personal friend who was and is now "regrettably" a retired Navy Seal Team Six member, who claims that the Navy forced most of them out one way or the other after Red Cell. I have seen the video through a friend and I would like to obtain my own copy. Any suggestions where I could purchase one? I live in Illinois.

Possible Self

Continued revising

What do Wikipedians and newbies think of adding 'rumored' news items to featured articles? Should I post these on the talk page instead? For example, I would like to point what if there is 'sourced' news on some print media? Can i include it directly on the article? Or would putting it on the talk page be better?

- K H

If it's a featured article, you should list it on the talkpage first to get the reactions of other editors before posting it for everyone to see. Bjelleklang - talk 19:37, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New article submission

Apologies if this is in your FAQ, but I couldn't find it. I have created a new article for submission, but it doesn't seem to yet appear when one searches for it. What is the waiting time / approval period / process before a newly-created article is available for viewing by the entire community?

Another New Article Submission Question

Hi there, basic question I know, but if i choose to write an article how does it become visible in a search, does it:

(a) Get evaluated by a higher level wiki user who then somehow registers/links it so it appears if searched for...or...

(b) Is there some markup that is added to the article editing page that links it to a category etc so it will show up in a search.

Article Suggestion

If we are wnting to add an article, but don't have time to write one, can we make a suggestion for somone to start one?

Indeed you can, see: Wikipedia:Requested articles. - Akamad 11:18, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I created my first page yesterday as well as my account. The topic was Regional Health Information Organization. It was unclear what happens after I click Save Page and the page is available off the search field. Is there a time period before it is available or do I need to "move" from Talk to Main? Thanks.

You don't have to do anything, the search index will be updated after a while, it is updated manually by the developers usually in the weekly timeframe. google etc may index the page sooner though, the article is also available immediately by typing the name in and clicking "Go" rather than search. - cohesiontalk 16:31, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scientific Method and Irrelvance

I am getting back to Wikipedia after a 2 year lapse, and want to add material on Scientific Method and particularly Irrelevance as part of that to your site, and would appreciate help suggestions.

This already is online @ www.nexit.org

and I am James H.L. Lawler (Ph.D. and misc other alphabet soup - excuse informality), I want to get Irrelevance and Scientific Mehtod on your site; and this was presented quite some time ago -1990 (English with Spanish Translation ) by invitation to The Institute for Advanced Studies in Lima, Peru; and several other places (University of San Marcos, Aeriquipa, Trujillo, etc. )thereafter.

The material I believe is a major addition to Scientific Method and/ but I do not wish to change what you have now on line-- that is what someone else thought and I do not particularly disagree with it, but I also suggest that my article is MUCH more definitive, and is philosophiclly more precise. It starts somewhere and make a systematic listing of components, and gets to new ideas. I also am acutely aware that most so called "scientists" cannot make a really coherent definition of what they do, and that needs to be rectified.

I also object to the concept that science cannot be clearly defined (that is listed by one person in your Scientific Method page, and indicates the sorry state of Sci Method today). That negative assumptoin is a self fulfiling prophesy from someone who never was able to make such a definition. Henry Ford said "Whether you believe you can or believe you cannot; you are probably right" -- I prefer to just DO it - and not to assume I cannot!

Thanks JHLL (Jhlawr 14:39, 22 February 2006 (UTC))[reply]

If your ideas can go into a new article then go ahead and make the new article. If your ideas will substantially change an existing article, I recommend that you write them in a safe place (eg User:Jhlawr/Sandbox), then discuss on the talk page of the article you wish to change.--Commander Keane 17:26, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Limerence

Dear Wikipedia,

I am the author of Love and Limerence and the inventor of the term.

The section on limerence is both complexly nuanced and in keeping with my own impressions, although I have not completed the reading and may have more to say about it when I do.

An eBook of my "Collected Works" was recently released. May I post the following announcement in the Limerence section and, if so, how do I go about it?

Thank you for your help.

Dorothy Tennov, Ph.D. 302-684-8396 [email protected] www.tennov.com Author: Psychotherapy: The Hazardous Cure (1975), Love and Limerence: The Experience of Being in Love (1979, 1999) A Scientist Looks at Romantic Love & Calls It Limerence - The Collected Works of Dorothy Tennov (2005)

An eBook, containing both fiction and nonfiction, titled The Collected Works of Dorothy Tennov (2005) has been released. To obtain a PDF copy, contact the publisher, Stephen Ellerin ([email protected]). For a sample of the novel, go to http://www.gramps.org/Grannies/GranTOC/TennovTrialSample.htm

Description of the eBook Contents:

Fiction: In The Trial (a love story), the limerence research story is told as it actually happened and as it might happen. Written between June 2001, and January 2002, it is a full-length novel in which a client sues a psychotherapist. The limerence research methodology is described. Fictional court proceedings dramatize a debate about psychotherapy based on journal articles. The use of scientific approaches to human experience is demonstrated. Reactions to two of my books are thinly disguised reality, e.g., in the novel, limerence is called Love Two and I am authors Alan Browne and Pamela Cushing. The Brew3 Quintet is a full-length comedy in which characters from The Trial find themselves sole possessors of a new scientifically proven “Love Two” potion. Two short plays depict the nursing home experience from two perspectives – residents and nurses’ aides. Nonfiction: Papers, essays, book reviews, colleague reactions, media treatment, and testimonies from readers of Love and Limerence (Tennov, 1979; 1999). Essays on political and scientific subjects. Almost all fiction and many nonfiction pieces -- on human nature science, religion, racism, human ethology, politics, etc. -- have not previously been published or posted. Possibly your preferences are set to open up pages in an external editor. To change it back to normal:
  1. Go to your preferences (Special:Preferences)
  2. Go to the "Editing" section
  3. Untick "Use external editor by default"
